(SOLVED) removed kde4 now kdm will not auto start

I foolishly tried KD4 on my laptop. When it proved too slow I removed it expecting KDE3 take over. Now when starting the machine it works through the normal boot up then reports no image (?) then drops to the command line. Works for me but will through my wife and boys. How do I get KDE to pickup?

    Thanks

Re: removed kde4 now kdm will not auto start

Can you get Gnome started? If yes, try to use it to fix the system.

I hope your system is not broken by going back and forth between KDE3 and KDE4.

BTW: I also did the move to KDE4 --- it is a bit slower, but I switched of and Compiz which made it even more slower in my case. I think I will stay with it because the next improved release, KDE4.2, is on its way very soon.

Before doing anything drastic please wait for more informed opinions. For example check:

    Good luck,

See whether kdm was not removed by mistake:

      Code:
      sudo apt-get install kdm
If you get an error message saying it is installed already do a

      Code:
      sudo dpgk-reconfigure kdm
And tell it to use kdm rather than kdm-kde4 as default. You can now restart X by typing

      Code:
      sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop|start|restart
Note that stop|start|restart are your options. Try to stop it first, then start.

You should now have your kdm back for good

I know kdm is there because I can start it from the command line. I'll try the reconfigure this evening.

        Thanks

Re: (SOLVED) removed kde4 now kdm will not auto start

Thanks for the help. Unless the speed issue is resolved, at least somewhat, I'll have to move away from KDE. It is simply becoming too much for my little laptop to run well.
