I installed Kubuntu on my computer, I think 8.somethingorother. I really liked the look of the desktop, but it didn't seem to prompt me for upgrades/updates like my previous Ubuntu did. I found something to change the look of the desktop to more like Ubuntu, but although some of the features I liked were there then, I still don't have auto-notification of upgrades available like I did in Ubuntu. Also, no longer does it tell me the battery status of my wireless mouse. I also cannot open *.pdf files no matter what I do. HELP!!!!!!!!!

Re: Newbie Needs Help
Please try to manually update your system and see if the problem with upgrade notifications persists.
You can do this by any preferred method below:
a) starting System > Adept Manager, then clicking the reload button in the upper left corner and after that the "upgrade" button (blue arrow) becomes available.
b) starting a command prompt (ALT+F2, type Konsole and hit enter), type
Code:sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade
c) use either the Reload button in Adept manager or the sudo aptitude update command to download package lists and then use the notifier icon in systray to start the updating process.
As for the battery status of your wireless mouse, I have no clue, I didn't even know it could be monitored.
For .pdf files, you can use the program Okular. KDE4 doesn't link pdf files to Okular automatically if I remember well, so you will have to do it manually once:
click on a pdf-file, you will be asked with which program to open it. In the text box type: /usr/bin/okular (please confirm if it is really exactly there, I have no KDE4 installed). At the bottom of the dialog box, you will find the option to open this filetype with Okular always.Once your problem is solved please edit the first post of your topic and add [SOLVED] in front of the subject. In that way, others can benefit from your experience!
