FPS - Crisp Desktop KDE vs XP using Nvidia 8800 GTX Ultra

    Hi everyone,

I am using the latest drivers for my GFX card, and run 2 x 24 inch Dell LCD's native res is 1900x1200 per monitor with a home built system using EVGA MOBO, EVGA Video Card.

So the quick question is why no matter what I do to speed up these Linux desktops, Gnome, KDE, reduction in effects, etc can't I achieve the same crisp look that I have on the same hardware using XP SP3.

For instance taking a browser like Firefox and dragging it around the desktop if I use Gnome, KDE, Xrender, OpenGL, pretty much every choice seems to lag when compared to XP, when I do tests my FPS on all the Linux choices are very high, I have tried pretty much every v-sync option performance setting, its a feel thing it feels slower, and actually starts to bother my eyes.

Only thing that seems different is that under the Nvidia X server I see that it's running at 59.9 or 8 MHrtz instead of 60, I am figuring that this display number is more acurate then the windows version and is showing the precise setting.

When I chose to ScreenRes options I am only offered the 50 Mhrtz choice, I pretty much read every line of the X configuration manual and tried many options.

Could be that I am running twin view at 3800x1200 and that the hardware acceleration even though its setup up the same as XP on the right monitor is attempting to hardware accelerate the entire desktop regardless of the settings and this is causing the slight change.

I think I have tried every option I can find, every desktop, just wondering if Direct X has a more direct route the hardware layer then the Linux OpenGL or X-Render version of the driver, could be the way the windows are rendered on Gnome, and KDE, I am just out of ideas, any news ones would be very welcome.

    Thanks!

Little side note KDE beta and Blender dont work well together what ever you do back up your settings before launching it, I had 2 hard resets just attempting to open a file, running under Gnome works fine so if I need to use that is the work around.

What version of Kubuntu are you running? Are you aware of the HOWTO: Install and use the Envy script installer for video drivers?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Was running the BETA 4.2 version but I just ripped it all out, cleaned the system as much as I can am about to reinstall it all. One thing I wasnt using was compiz which I saw listed in your bio, so I read about that decided I didn't need KDE at all and just could with Emerald and Compiz and just run the Gnome desktop, this didn't work well. :-) Getting the system to load both those programs would have caused me to write a start up script and my goal is to drive all installs via the easy to use tools that I don't have to think about or reread the directions on, I am not lazy at the moment but you never know when lazyness will hit ya in the pie hole.

So your response has me running like a blood hound on the way to glory, thanks I will check back once I continue to remove things. second thought I think I am going to rip out Gnome Ubuntu and install Kbunt clean from the start this is all for fun, and testing hardware accelerated desktop speeds, rendering, also installed the 32-bit version which isn't showing all my memory so Kbunt 64 then compiz, this week of getting everything working including getting my X-fi soundblaster actually producing sound has been taken all 31 years of my computer experience to get all working, but its dam fun to learn new things or is it relearning things I knew 12 years ago and don't remember.
