ok i now have my home file backed up on my windows system

I saw you earlier saved the big /etc directory. Probably you could have settled for only a couple of them, like /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/networking/interfaces and maybe /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But, oh well, it's good that you have it all.

If you've also got the /home directory and all of its contents, then that's everything for your data and your desktop settings, including your e-mail, although the exact folder where evolution keeps messages is unknown to me.

So, you're backed up and ready to install Kubuntu 8.10. Are you going to use a Live CD or an Alternate Install CD?
