    Re: Major Crash Here

Trust Aged Hippy to go for the reinstall option

If you can read Ubuntu from Windows could you still go into the following Ubuntu files and post them here?

    /etc/apt/sources.list
    /etc/network/interfaces
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Although I'm questioning whether/how he is able to read the Ubuntu filesystem -- you gotta have fs-driver installed in Win XP to do that.

        Re: Major Crash Here

ok i have switched over to my windows drive..

now i am not able to read the drive from here..before i could see all my files?
i opened up my easeus partition manager and it says my hard drive is full?

i went back to some posts i did in ubuntu and found that i downloaded a program called diskinternals..
i used it to transfer some files but here is what i saw last time i used it..
i do not have a clue how this happened..

thanks to both of you.i downloaded the suggested link.. i see 2 physical drives..
under hard disk drives i see
        c: 2 of them
        h:1
        1 linux native volume
        1 linux swap
        1 unallocated space(wdc_37gb at end)596.60mb

        does this make any sense
i am going to stay on windows here for a bit in case i can retrieve some info for you using diskinternals
        ty all again

A full filesystem would explain a failure to boot into your GUI. But not borked sources, lack of networking, etc.

            Re: Major Crash Here

There is an easy way to check the fs. Can you run the command "df -h" and show us the output?

                    Re: Major Crash Here

Never heard of disk internals I'm afraid.

If I were you I'd boot a live CD of your choice, save what is important in your home folder onto a usb stick and REINSTALL.

Somebody with a decent grasp of linux would most probably be able to rescue your system but he/she would need physical access.

So far we are seriously lacking hard info without which this is looking more and more like a wild goose chase.

Oh, and good night to all and sundry

                      Sleep well, Mr. T!

@hatman, the Linux logs are in /var/log.

Yes, given the history of a crashed upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to Kubuntu 8.10, I would expect all kinds of gory events. Kind of like looking at a train wreck with a microscope, I would guess. :P

                                Three teeth out? Good luck...

Save your entire /home folder if poss. If you haven't got enough space for that left choose ~/.kde, ~/.mozilla ~/.openoffice* and /.gnome and/or ~/.evolution
