    Re: Major Crash Here

"overloaded" is not a problem unless you have a full filesystem issue. You can clean up unneeded packages and the cache with

    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoclean

      Re: Major Crash Here

After the install, you may want to also run "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" to make sure you have all the essentials in place.

        ok dib it finally finished.
i booted back up and it did the same thing
takes me to the ubuntu screen with no mouse or keyboard
i can hit alt f2 which will take me to my dave@dave-desktop instead of the root if this helps?

what do i enter for your post to get a report
But, I wonder if it is installing Kubuntu packages, or Ubuntu packages? I guess it doesn't matter, as long as you get some functionality back. If you do, we really need to review your /etc/apt/sources.list file -- it appeared from one of the earlier error messages that it was not appropriate for version 8.10.

This sounds like the X server remains broken.

If you can log in at your dave-desktop$ prompt, run these:

            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
Watch for errors from the second one.

              Hi,

what a read, what a thread! Hope I'm not butting in but I'd be interested to see

              1. a copy of the sources,
              2. the xorg,
              3. the network interfaces file and
              4. the output of ifconfig.

hat, under ubuntu, do you have access to your windows partition, i.e. can you write to it? If so, could you copy those files over so you can post them here?

To copy on the command line you would do the following (as user, not as root):
              cp /etc/apt/sources.list /complete_path_to_your_windows_partition/
              cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /complete_path_to_your_windows_partition/
              cp /etc/networking/interfaces /complete_path_to_your_windows_partition/
To get the output of a command in a file we have to jump through a little hoop first:

              sudo ifconfig>ifconfig
              Now copy it over
              cp ifconfig /complete_path_to_your_windows_partition/

                ok dib
wheni stop the gdm and the sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
it takes me right back to the ububt desktop with no keyboard and mouse

toad i am not vthat good at this stuff to do what you suggest
i can get to the dave@dave-desktop~$ now with alt f2

i can however see my files if i use my windows and double click my comp

i honestly beleive my xserver is misconfigured somehow..
is there anything i can do from my desktop to get some info for you

i have to write things down and go to nother comp to do this so its fairly madning

Right, I thought your borked Ubuntu and windows were on the same computer... Disregard my post and carry on backing up

                      Re: Major Crash Here

If you have evolution e-mail messages in the hidden .kde folder somewhere, you may lose them if you reinstall KDE.

You were previously running 8.04 -- did you have both KDE 3.5 and KDE 4 installed? If that's the case, which desktop did you run Evolution in?

I would seriously recommend getting your data off first, before trying any major desktop removals and replacements. :P

                          Re: Major Crash Here

You can read your Ubuntu from Windows In that case I'd copy your entire home Ubuntu folder over to Windows, reinstall and copy it back again. What do others/you think?
