Is that Ubuntu CD a Live CD?

Do you have a USB stick, or does that computer have another hard drive in it, or where would you like to save the data from your broken Linux system?

I don't know evolution -- not sure where it saves its messages. So the answer is definitely "YES" but it will be your research project to learn where evolution email files are saved.

By booting a Live CD, and then mounting your Linux hard drive partition manually, you'll be able to copy data to whatever storage device, or other hard drive partition, that you would like. It's all salvageable.

Good luck with the X server. Because you were running the Gnome Display Manager (GDM) in Ubuntu, and Kubuntu uses the K Display Manager (KDM), you've got some challenges to make it work right -- we don't know what parts of the upgrade were implemented before it broke, so I dunno what is missing from a fully integrated X server there. :P

i ran apt-get -f install and it started to run and replace a bunch of files...

i am also able to run
sudo dpkg --audit
gives me a list of the programs that are not fully installed
how can i fully install these?

I don't know what dibl would recommend, but i would be inclined to boot from the CD, rescue what files are important, save them somewhere safe, then re-format the drive and re-install from scratch.

There are many things broken, things which may not show up for a while.

Yep, what AH said.

@hatman, you already used the command to "fully install these" -- that was

sudo apt-get -f install

As you see, the problems with broken and half-upgraded stuff exceed the package manager's ability to recover.

Part of your problem is that your source list is buggered. With a bad source list, there's no "apt-get" command that is going to help.

Did you figure out where Evolution saves the e-mail files?

ok heres what i am doing now..
i booted normally and go to my gnome login screen
i hit alt f2

i was able to see my dave@dave-desktop~$
so heres what i did
i ran sudo apt-get -f install
downloaded new files

then ran
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
now they are installing so i will se what happens
total of 179 new files and some packages that were not installed completely
will let you know what it does

Good -- sounds promising!

But, I wonder if it is installing Kubuntu packages, or Ubuntu packages? I guess it doesn't matter, as long as you get some functionality back. If you do, we really need to review your /etc/apt/sources.list file -- it appeared from one of the earlier error messages that it was not appropriate for version 8.10.

still installing
i think its rplacing my whole system
i noticed xserver was replaced
python
nautilus
and a bunch of others..
am i going to have an overloaded system?
will i have to delete the old files?

i beleive alot was ubuntu
i am hoping to get up and running so i can launch a terminal and then log into the forum so you can tell me how to post these error messages instead of having to write them down
this way there will be no missing errors
