Limiting applications to single instances

I've been unable to find if there is a way in Linux to limit applications to only one instance, if the application doesn't have the option built in.

Is there a way to do this? I'm using Kubuntu 8.04.

    Any advice appreciated.
I am relatively new to Linux, but quite experienced with DOS and Windows. I'm comfortable editing things like fstab, etc., but I need specific instructions of what files to edit and what to add.

My system is Kubuntu 10.10, using KDE 4.5.1.
