KDE 4.1 Plasma Crash on Boot

I tried to install KDE 4.1 upgrading from KDE 4.0 using the usual method, adding "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main", then running "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". It worked more or less fine, with a minor problem where I had to run a dpkg command manually as directed by apt. Restarted the computer.

Seems to boot fine, even pulls up the new KDE 4.1 login screen. However, after I login, Plasma crashes immediately (Kcrash report below), but everything else works fine. I can use ALT-F2 to run programs, and they all run fine. There was also an error about my audio card, but Amarok happily plays music.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? I suppose I can downgrade back to 4.0, but that would be annoying...

As for system specs, it's a fairly new work computer that ran KDE 4.0 smoothly.
    CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz
    Memory: 2 Gigs
Video: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
Audio: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

The only message that dmesg reported that seemed relevant was:
    Code:

Kcrash report (I do absolutely love the new save to file function on the Kcrash reports):

Re: KDE 4.1 Plasma Crash on Boot

So you upgraded to KDE 4.1, from KDE 4.0.was your Plasma screen working under KDE 4.0?
Do you remember 'how' it was running?
Why not apply same, to KDE 4.01?
Same goes for your Sound problem, was it working properly, under KDE 4.0?
    Again. how ?

As new to Kubuntu as I am, I have read enough, to understand that a Plasma screen/monitor is a very recent 'addition'....to Monitor types Linux has to deal with...therefore, there may be some sort of 'conflicting error'....in using one.
So, pardon my still 'Windows-locked' mind, as I am in the process of 'tinkering/experimenting'....with Linux, never having used it before.
'Tinkering/experimenting' (re: learning all I can about using Linux.)!
I am not 'up to speed', yet.....with the use of using the Console/Terminal 'process'.......to configure my Linux distro (Kubuntu 8.04) properly.
What I have learnt (so far), though, is that Linux DOES hold a 'preference'......for (1) nVidia-based Graphics-cards and (2) Creative Labs Sound-cards.
Anything else, well, you have to do the usual Linux 'thing'....to use Terminal/Console....to manually install what your Graphics-card OR Sound-card may be.
I have both, on my machines.
    Yeah, i have 2.
One is a 2.8 Ghz Intel, The other is a 3.0Ghz AMD Dual-core. (Both have Kubuntu. The latter is a 'Dual-Boot'...with XP Pro 32-bit.)
So, i am virtually struck...with just the Linux (Kubuntu) OS, doing it the 'old fashioned way'......one step at a time, one program at a time.
Like I have said, I am 'tinkering/experimenting'......to learn how ....to use Linux.
You, Kuang, on the hand, have used Linux before, the KDE 4.0 version.
That makes you one step ahead of me. (You know how it works, certainly enough to make the 'adjustments' you know you have to make...to make your system 'workable'.

Re: KDE 4.1 Plasma Crash on Boot

      i had this problem

      steps took:

      logged into kde 3.5

      deleted the ./kde4 folder

      removed all kde4 packages

      reinstalled kde4.1

      added plasmoids packages

      all good

Re: KDE 4.1 Plasma Crash on Boot

Removing / renaming the ~./kde4 folder is ample.
Kde4.1 will recreate it at next login.

You must do this from kde3.5 (as suggested), recovery mode or with crtl+alt+f1 (comand line) at login.

        No need to reinstall.

The problem is that kde4.1 doesn't like ~./kde4 from kde4.0
HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)
        4 GB Ram
        Kubuntu 18.10

Thanks! Removing the .kde4 folder did it, works fine now.

              Removing only

              ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc
              ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletrc

              did the trick for me
