Okay, yes, a KDM question, not KDE. That said ....
I made a single change to the default KDM theme used in HH (kubuntu located in /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu) to change the wallpaper used. Just had to edit the kubuntu.xml file and change the name of the wallpaper file. The new wallpaper was already copied (as root) to /usr/share/wallpapers. When I did a restart (Ctrl+Alt+BkSp) I was very pleased with the results. The login screen that overlays the background was as one expected, complete with the partial transparency. I really liked the result. So, I wanted to be able to take a screen shot of it.
After editing the kubuntu.xml file, I followed Rog131's Re: Screenshot of Login Screen? post in preparation of being able to get a screen shot of the resulting new login screen. That's where I believe, my trouble began.
I edited (after making backups of the files) and made the changes to the two files (kdesudo kate /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and kdesudo kate /etc/kde3/kdm/Xaccess) and restarted again (Ctrl+Alt+BkSp). Now, while I am still using the new background image, it appears as if the kubuntu.xml file is not being read for the rest of the screen display. The greeter image is not what I had before - it is different, and has no semi-transparency.
I undid the changes to the kdmrc and Xaccess files and restarted. It had no effect, and the 'other' greeter image is still being used.
Anyone know what happened, and how I can get my system to use the /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu/kubuntu.xml file?
Note: I did install kdmtheme this evening. I can't remember if I did so before, or after, the changes above.

The post in the Ubuntu Forum by The Recorder - KDM Theme Manager Not Working - was spot on! After adding the entry UseTheme=true to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and changing Theme=@@@ToBeReplacedByDesktopBase@@@ to Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu/kubuntu.xml and restarting (Ctrl+Alt+BkSp) I have my desired KDM Theme with it's glorious semi-transparency!! Man am I happy!
