Re: Any first impressions on KDE 4.1 beta for Kubuntu?

I tried it for a couple of weeks and then deleted it off all my machines. What a disappointment. I saw little in the way of real improvements and lots of broken functionality. I was shocked by simple things like not opening rar files. I have to say that the only thing more underwhelming than hardy was kde4. Oh well kde3 still works fine.

        I just came across this:
        http://www.kde-look.org/content/show...2648bd8034ce00

        Extract and install with:
        ./install.sh

        then do:
        Code:
sudo apt-get install p7zip bunzip2 bzip2 gzip rar unrar tar zip unzip
you may have to remove bunzip as it couldn't be found on my setup :P

        It works in Intrepid

        edit:
Have to figure out HH remix kde4.1 beta.

gzip couldn't be found on my HH setup.

In HH the service menus show in dolphin but gives an error:
        cannot find program........

Have to edit the .desktop files but not sure how, or rather to what :P

That seems to be an ongoing problem with HH KDE4 Remix from start to KDE4.1 Beta 2. Not just with the service menus but other things as well. The system can't find certain Apps for a user and when running KDESUDO. Very annoying indeed.

Well I finally got it to where I could log into my KDE 4.1 I had to delete my .kde4 folder. I think that I can actually use 4.1 I wish that I could hide my panels but I will just wait for the next release to come around for that. At least with this go around I can now move my panels to the tops of my screens. Way to go KDE you just landed yourself another 4.1 user. I will still leave my 3.5 installed for the time being but 4.1 looks like I can use it.

I think the default Theme isn't quite right. There are many 3.0 Themes now over at FireFox. Give one a try. Aero Silver Fox Basic is the one I'm using right now and it looks great.

Thank you that new theme is very nice and looks a lot better than the default one

NP. Glad that was what it was. I agree the Default isn't that good.

                        I find the tabs in:
                        https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7574

are much nicer looking, but, clearly, these are the two best themes for ff3 today.

Edit: I take that back... the claydoh link is quite a bit worse since it doesn't fix the toolbar rendering problem...

                          kde4.1 is here

                          On my HH kde3 / kde4.1 setup:
                          -Kate-kde4 / kde3 still doesn't start from the panel

-Dolphin is very slow when right clicking on a file or choosing a file / directory.

I wonder where those tabs are

                            File -> New Tab.

Also, turning off the Information panel has helped with some Dolphin problems.

Thank you. I also found a solution:
settings-->toolbarsettings (or something, mine is in german) and adding "add new tab "/ "remove tab" to the toolbar.

Now to keep the tab view permanent?

As for the info panel. Well I like that nd need it it a lot.

I just wish we could have those edit as root, etc. back

This works great for unpacking and compressing:
                              http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show...?content=84206
once installed the right click functions are back to normal
