Re: Any first impressions on KDE 4.1 beta for Kubuntu?

    Hi,
I updated my kubuntu 8.04 from KDE 4.04 to 4.1 beta ca. 5 days ago. Everything looks very nice and is more or less stable.
But I have the problem, that plasma uses 80% of my CPU time, all the time. So 5 minutes after startup I can roast some eggs on the backside of my notebook. At KDE 4.04 I did not have that problem.
Now I decided to go back to 4.04. But without that little problem, I would have never thougt about this.

Damn, I do not now if it happend by accident or by telepathy, but while I was reading your post I recognized that I missed that little "minimze all" widget in the taskbar. I thougt I had removed all widgets for testing.
Now everythings is all right and I do not have to go back to KDE 4.0.
        So little widget big effect.

        Thank you!!!

KDE 4.1 Beta 2 is out (almost ) > KDE 4.1 Beta 2 Release Announcement

Kubuntu repositories (Intrepid Ibex) are updating. Here Kubuntu is already telling:
          $ kde4-config --version
          Qt: 4.4.0
          KDE: 4.00.83 (KDE 4.0.83 (KDE 4.1 Beta2)
          kde4-config: 1.0
but some packages are still Beta 1 (Konqueror, Dolphin...)
          Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

            $ kde4-config --version
            Qt: 4.4.0
            KDE: 4.00.83 (KDE 4.0.83 (KDE 4.1 Beta2)
            kde4-config: 1.0
            I get that as well.

Some things are stiil strange though:
            As posted elsewhere:
            http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...;topicseen#new

Klipper was not installed and when I installed it with apt-get it installed a bunch of gnome stuff as well. Synaptic included.

I prefer synaptic-kde and it works again in kde4 (at least for now)

            after todays update (interpid):
            no kdesudo kate (konqueror, systemsettings,etc)
            kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings

            or

            kdesudo /usr/bin/systemsettings

            don't work either.

but running gksudo kate (etc) works

gksudo synaptic and others want to be started with gksudo

I also noticed that the little error "could not start /user/bin/kate" still pops up and that moving apps to favorites and / or panel loses the icons (again)

Kate still doesn't have a working "open previous"

not only does klipper not show up / start, nor does knetworkmanager (installed)
Samba still does not show the files in a share folder.

Putting apps in favorites or panel purges the icon and makes them unstartable.

            Putting the full path:
Url=file:///home/fintan2/.local/share/applications/kde4/synaptic.desktop in plasma-appletrc and kickoffrc does nothing.

Klauncher / plasma error still pops up with stuff like kate from anywhere /panel, kickoff or "run command"

            Edit: after todays (24.06.08) update:
Neither synaptic nor adept-manager start at all from kickoff "executable not found")

            Edit 2:
FF asks which version of Flash you want to install

For those who also want to live more 'on the edge' but still use Hardy, can now try out Project Neon's nightly builds of KDE4:
              https://edge.launchpad.net/~project-neon/+archive
These sit alongside your normal kde exactly the same way as the kde4 packages do, it adds a kde4-nightly option to kdm.

Not a huge difference between the versions, but if you want to check out a recent bugfix or option, its an easy way to try it out

Re: Any first impressions on KDE 4.1 beta for Kubuntu?

I did another update today (Intrepid)

kde4.1 bet2 is very sweat except for (at least for now):
running kdesudo kate shows me all my -txt files in ~ pertaining to kate
running kdesudo konqueror shows me the same pertaining to konqueror

but neither kate nor konqueror will start with "root" permisions.

Nice trick but not very useful for running an app as "root"

Hmm.... I am sure I will find more

Running kdesudo kate in a terminal:
                fintan1@fintanws2:~$ kdesudo kate
The program 'kdesudo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
                sudo apt-get install kdesudo
                bash: kdesudo: command not found
                fintan1@fintanws2:~$
                but gksudo kate works :P

                Installing kdesudo-kde4 from synaptic gives:
(Reading database ... 123273 files and directories currently installed.)
                Unpacking kdesudo-kde4 (from .../kdesudo-kde4_3.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...

                E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
                Reinstalling Kdesudo from synaptic worked.

                Edit:
Did upgrade to beta2 on my HH kde4 beta1 just now.

                still no alt+F2 >

                still have to do:
                kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kat / konqueror / systemsettings / etc

kdesudo kate give password screen and "cannot find command" > >

Still have to use autostart for klipper :P

                synaptic works again

kmail is hosed with the new update

kmail: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/lib/libkdepim.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN13KRichTextEdit17mouseReleaseEventEP11QMouseEve nt

gwenview depends on libkipi5 and wants to uninstall libkipi0, which digikam depends on, so you can't have both gwenview-kde4 and digikam installed now.

akregator is reporting a similar error:

akregator: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/lib/libkdepim.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN13KRichTextEdit17mouseReleaseEventEP11QMouseEve nt

They're still at version 4.0.80 and not 4.0.83 like all other packages update in beta 2.

They're either still compiling (as the announcement on the front page suggests) or have not been updated to support beta 2 as yet.

I wanted to try that form HH kde4 remax upgraded to kde 4.1 beta2
So I put these in the repos:
                      and did a refresh.
Looked in synaptic and chose "new in repositories" and install the nightly stuff I could think:
                      kde-nightly-base, etc

but my synaptic is not finishing correctly.

                      So my questions:
How can I get synaptic to behave?

And if not is there a way to do it with adept?

Failing that which packages do I have to install with sudo apt-get install?

Thank you all for any help

I have the same problem with synaptic on my HH remix upgraded to beta2.

Open up adept and search for nightly. Install the relevant packages and you should be good to rock.

I am using it right now and showing it off to some biz friends of mine

Looks pretty sweet in the details. Thank you claydoh

Now if only kdesudo would work without the full path and the "command not found" error, klipper would start up without using .autostart and ark would work from dolphin / konqueror I would be a happy man

                          Note !
Intrepid Ibex only has ark version: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 (and ark-kde4 but that is version 4.0.3) Maybe it is this > KubuntuIntrepidVersion
KDE 3 and KDE 4 libraries can exist side by side so where there is no stable KDE 4 application, we can keep the KDE 3 application.
When i tried Debian KDE 4.1:
Ark (v.4) was horribly broken - have to use GTK frontend (xarchive)
Alpha - Ark did not work at all.
Beta1 - Ark extracted all bit and pieces to the same directory.

I wonder if it works in HH remix 4.1 beta2 as well

                            I will soon find out

Todays Intrepid upgrade (75 packages), one of them was ark (4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3) to (4:4.0.83-0ubuntu6).

Note that with the ark 4.0.83 there are only one option:
                              Code:
                               ark --help
