Re: Any first impressions on KDE 4.1 beta for Kubuntu?

I am finding Kwin's new effects quite nice, and smoother for me than compiz (athlon xp 2700, geforce fx5200 card) . I have just the right amount of bling without it being crazy with only a couple of adjustments (I love wobbly windows for some reason)

dolphin is still crashy, especially when I try to connect to a remote ftp folder. It seems to get a touch more stable with each update so far,

i am still kicking the tires so far, not at my keyboard as much as I would like

Yes, you can and it crashes plasma most of the time :P
Neat trick though when they get it cleaned up. Thats why I do it manually.

Kwin is definitely a big step forward. Especially on my 5year old machine with a ati 9250 card

Yeah dolphin is still not finished and I wonder when we will get actions>edit / open as root back.
        So usefull

I am still wondering why some people have keyboard shortcuts (like alt+F2) and some don't (like me > )

They are listed but not activated. for some reson I cannot fathom. Yet.

I think that is just a matter of packaging, as the 'edit as root' is simply a servicemenu, and i did try a daily snapshot of 4.1 in a vm and dolphin didn't crash

Having Kontact-kde4 available is also nice as well, though I didn't play with that too much. My memories of Kontact for kde 3.0 when new (and lost emails) keep that in check

That is why I use TB with "keep mail on server" and configure kontact (kmail) the same way.

But it does look nice so far.

            Any ideas on alt+F2?

nope, other than that Kickoff (the new menu thingy) may have a different shortcut setup. I wonder what happens if we tried using the 'classic' menu? Would the shortcuts work?

I tried to purge KDE 4 Desktop, in KDE 3.5.9, unfortunately it looks like that is screwed as it won't stay up long enough to run the commands. I managed to remove the PPA repository line from sources.list and KDE 4 is relatively stable albeit adept is still locked.

I agree with Claydoh, the Desktop Effects seemed to have ironed out quite a few issues and seemed to run very nicely. I think this will be a great alternative to those who don't want to bother with Compiz, although Compiz works rather well for me at the moment with KDE4.1.

I'll have to also say the the Desktop effects aren't perfect though. I just happened to notice that when I turn it on, Thunderbird is completely invisible. I know it is there by the way the mouse acts and the fact that I can fumble around and find a menu action and see the menu list, but no window. Odd. Turn off Desktop effects and it reappears.

Edit: GKRELLM does the same. If I close them and reopen all is OK. Weird.

Re: Any first impressions on KDE 4.1 beta for Kubuntu?

Well I finished my exams and now I'm back at trying to repair my KDE 4.1.
First of all how do I purge my KDE4? I tried
                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-kde4-desktop
but it dosen't do anything when I "reinstall" it it's still all the same.

OT (yeah sorry for off topic):
I decided to make an clean install of HH, but I don't know which to use the remix version or KDE3.5 version.
But that's the smallest problem. It will not be hard to back up my documents, but I would some gow like to import my firefox bookmarks and passwords is that possible?

Also how could I make an special partition for my home folder if possible even before new installation.
Or at least while installing my kubuntu again.

                      To go back on topic:
Is KDE 4.1 stable enough to be the only DE on my OS? Probably not. I read about all the problems with Plasma, can I have KDE 4.0.5 and KDE4.1 on same OS?

                      Thanks for your help.
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

Your FF settings are in/hoem/username/.mozilla so using your original /home/username in the new installation will give you all the settings.

Also how could I make an special partition for my home folder if possible even before new installation.
Or at least while installing my kubuntu again.
I always use gparted live before making a new installation on a machine so I can make a separate /home and /data partition.
                        Gparted live:
                        http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Is KDE 4.1 stable enough to be the only DE on my OS? Probably not. I read about all the problems with Plasma, can I have KDE 4.0.5 and KDE4.1 on same OS?
KDE4.1 has a few quirks as you can read above.

I don't think you can install kde4.0.5 parallel to kde4.1. I think kde 4.1 will replace kde 4.0.5.
And kde 4.1 will use the same /home/username/.kde4 directory and they are not compatible between the two kde4's.
For HH 3.5 kde 4.1 will effectively remove and replace kde3.5.9.

So if you want to test both I would install both separately with a separate username on /home.

You can easily move / copy your configurations (FF, TB, Kontact, etc) to the new user after installation.

I hope this points you in the right direction.

I am going to start again from scratch with Hardy Heron and update with 4.0.5 which is now available. 4.1 beta looks nice but is far too flaky at the moment.

I installed (from scratch) Kubuntu 8.04 and KDE 4.1 Beta last weekend. After mucking around for a few days, the only issues with KDE 4.1 that are bothersome for me are:

                            - no Alt-F2 (so it's necessary to "kdesu konqueror" in the terminal, for example)
                            - Dolphin and Konqueror both crash if you right-click in a whitespace (so you have to use Edit>Paste, for example, to paste a file)

That's it -- there are workarounds to the issues that I found. Compiz is working pretty well -- less than 100% reliable on auto-starting, but it starts from fusion-icon every time.

                                I like this article:
                                http://troy-at-kde.livejournal.com/16734.html
                                but this makes me think:
                                Quote from the article:
While I can easily identify this article as the ranting of a single user, who, as domain claims, likes to rant. The comments are what bother me. Feel free to read them all and see if it's just reaction to imperfect distro packages for 4.0, or what. From some of the comments: "I agree with you there. I discovered KDE4 by downloading the KDE4 version of Kubuntu. I do not recall it saying anywhere that it was beta, a work in progress, or a concept demonstration. It was passed off to the naive user as a new GUI option. THAT is what is most wrong with KDE4: the premature promotion of it as working software."

Now, I've never tried the kubuntu 4.x packages, and maybe they are just bad, but I'm not sure where they got the impression that 4.0 was no longer a work in progress. I mean, I guess not all the users read the KDE news, or managed to read some of our promotional signals during the 4.0 release phase (which were clearly about where 4.x was going in the future, and not all about 4.0 being the second coming of Christ...)
