KDE broken in Hardy - some solved - some new problems

Back to Gutsy in order to ask ...

I've lost the top line or two on the windows (The one where the name of the program etc. is shown) on all programs, and some even the line "File Edit ..."

The programs/windows does not show in the panel. And I cannot log out - have to restart the PC.

What silly ting have I done? Well, I run both type KDE on Hardy Heron on another HD on this PC. Then I found something about KDE window decorator, installed it, which included Compiz.

The first thing that happened, was I lost the ability to log out. What happens is - a black screen. Wait ... wait ... nothing. CTRL-ALT-DEL -> reboot.

Then the PC froze, and I found Compiz really being too demanding on my PC.

Add to this some upgrading problems, and:

Removed all things Compiz (Adept Manager) - and here I am, with broken KDE 3.5 and 4.0; that is, Hardy (core 2.6.24-16)

Anyone know what to do now?

That's what messed it up -- whatever it was. "Window Decoration" is the top bar and side borders of your windows. You broke 'em. But I'm not sure why that would keep you from logging out or shutting down properly. It sounds like maybe 2 different breakages.

I run Compiz on HH with no problem but I haven't tried the new KDE4 Desktop Effects because I knew I like Compiz.

If you can log in to your desktop (KDE3 or KDE4) and run the KMenu>System>Konsole, then issue
    Code:
    kwin --replace
you might get window borders. Then you can open Adept Manager and make sure all elements of Compiz are removed. Then if you restart the X server you can see if your login is working correctly and the default desktop includes window decorations when you open a window.

If you can get all that working, then we can see what happens when you open Konsole and issue
    Code:
    sudo shutdown now -r
-- maybe there will be some errors.

      Thank you -
      Code:
      kwin --replace
did work for KDE 3.5, but so far not for 4.0.

The logout problem is only logout - not
      Code:
      shutdown
      or
      Code:
      shutdown -r
      .

What happens is just a black screen. The video signal is not turned off. As it is possible toCTRL- ALT-DEL out, it looks like the command line is there?

When I log into 4.0, I can close programs where the "File Edit ...." line is present - like Opera and Console (KDE4), but this is not present in System settings. For some reason this prevents from typing in Console, as System settings is reappearing after restart.

Is there any reason to suspect your video driver? There was a new kernel the other day -- maybe the driver need to be reinstalled?

          Yes and no.

Yes, I had to reinstall the video driver.

No, the problem started before this upgrade.

Re: KDE broken in Hardy - some solved - some new problems

Earlier I have fixed KDE4 problems by just removing, restarting and re-install.

            This time no help.

Then I removed the hidden folders /home/nils/.kde and .kde4.

This fixed the KDE4 problems - but introduced a new one:

KDE3.5 give the messages "Misformed URL system:/ OK" and "Misformed URL trash:/ OK"

So, while I can get to my home folder - Dolphin cannot find anything else.

It seems clear that the co-extistance of KDE 3.5 and KDE 4 is not so separated and un-problematic after all.

Anyone knowing how to fix my KDE 3.5?
