    Testing Kubuntu 8.04 Beta1 KDE4 remix

Hi all! I tought that could be interesting creating one pool for those who are testing Kubuntu 8.04 beta with KDE4 so we could tell here what things we find strange or what problems we have found so we could find solutions or just report bugs.

By the way I have just installed Kubuntu today and I've found some strange things.

First is that this beta haven't got the Amarok player and in his place is introduced one jukebox player that haven't the MP3 codec so I had to install amarok and he asked me to install MP3 support.. and now I've both players working fine.

Second hapens with Konqueror.. it hasn't got the flashplugin and I tryed to install the "flashplugin-nonfree" codec and nothing happens, flash seems not working by the moment.

Third is about Kate.. which i could't open in root mode to modify for example "sources.list" file. So I have modified it with nano in the Konsole.

Well i'll put in here all the strange things I found and the solutions if I found it.
Furthermore, Kubuntu 8.04 seems wonderful, I love how it looks. The oxygen proyect is a really great fresh air to the desktop and kde in general. It seems faster and greater.

Thanks for reading, I invite you to tell your experience too here

    Well then:

    * My laptop (M1330) get's way hotter than under 7.10 => fans are all the time on and at higher speed
    * I'm feeling somehow "limited", where are all the administration options (maybe a stupid newbie question)?
    * Are the remaining KDE3x apps inflicting KDE4 at any time? What happens after an app gets ported?

Newbie question: How can I select and delete let's say 5 items on the desktop (directly, no terminal, no file-manager)?

For the last question I don't know if I understood you well buy I had 2 archives in the desktop and for deleting it I made "right click" and "delete icon" but I think that I understood bad your question xD

about fans.. seems a big problem xD I'm testing it in a notebook too and my fans are good by the moment xD maybe your chase could be a kernel incompatibility or something else with the kernel used in beta. (imo, but i don't know 100% xD)
And with the administrative options I've seen some problems too for example with kate as I've mentioned

NOTE:-> Flashplugin in Konqueror was solved i made 2 things:
      type in konsole: "sudo apt-get build-dep flashplugin-nonfree"
      and rebooting.

Now flashplayer runs great on konqueror xD.
With kate i haven't found a solution yet.
      Thanks for your comment

That fixed flash player for me in Firefox 3 Beta as well

As for the kernel version: I can't tell, but that shouldn't be with a newer kernel version IMHO..

For the deleting task: I meant to select all items at once (no right click on every single item) and deleting them with DELETE or SHIFT+DELETE. At least on my desktop it's not possible to select all items...

Another more general thing concerning Firefox: What the hell are those developers thinking to change the order/place of (menu-)option? I'm a dual-boot user and I have to watch out all the time by questions like "Do you want to start a new session or restore the old one?" where the buttons are just flipped (like almost every button like "Ok / Cancel") or the way the address-bar behaves is also totally different, that's sooo anoying! If the answer is like "it fit's more into the general Linux behavior" or "you get used to it" or "it makes in the long run more sense from the usability point of view", then this person should give me 20 (bucks or push-ups).

Please please please, don't change such things on multi-platforms-application, that's a big pain in the a.. neck!!

That's because the icons are all individual plasma applets now and there is no way to delete multiple plasma applets at once (as far as I know). Get used to not having things on your desktop... it's the way of the future

Great. Back to the future? Pardon, but that's the dumbest thing the KDE team could have done (IMHO).

              Now I have a desktop-space, which I can't use, because....I don't know...?

Well, you can have them there if you want .....

I single-clicked a document on my KDE 4 desktop this morning, and Open Office Writer opened up and showed it to me, so it "works" in that way. And I take it that if I click the little red "X" in the lower right corner, I can make it disappear from my desktop.

Actually, being of the "clean desktop" persuasion, I am more annoyed by things like GoogleEarth and RealPlayer that have to be installed in my home directory/desktop. It's equally tricky to "hide" them but not "delete" them -- at the moment there's some junk on my desktop that I'd just as soon not have to look at. :P

Yes, I think that too, but maybe as it is still developing could have errors and that could be one
                  But as I've said I don't know 100% xDDD

I've found some more errors, for example.. I can't open .rar files with ARK after installing the "rar" package( maybe some files are missed of ARK or something else.. I don't know )
And when some device of storage is plugged in and it appears one window to do an action if you select open it with dolphin it gets one error message saying that the folder does not exist and it doesn't open the folder until you select to open it in the applet in the start menu.

Last problem that I've seen is about .deb archives.. they don't install.. they are opened with ark but not installed.. maybe another missing package or something else.. xD

That's not what I mean. That's the first thing I've disabled; I do want double-click to open the item. One to mark it and the double to open it...

                    I mean that:
                    1. Create 5 new documents on your desktop
                    2. Try to select altogether and delete them at once

Agreed, even worse, they stay there even after you remove them (terminal or adept manager, doesn't matter). Really annoying.

                      relative n00b question here :P

I started with Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha 4, immediately added KDE4, and have been upgrading diligently via the little reminder icon in the system tray ever since. Am I now running KDE4 on 8.04 beta? I boot to the .12 kernel from grub.

Can I even post to this, or will I have to d/l and install the beta remix from disc to bug report here?

There has been an issue that there were three versions of KDE4 on Kubuntu right now. The Gutsy or 7.10 KDE4, and then the 8.04 Hardy KDE4 installed by grabbing kde4-core and then the version that comes with the remix.

I wish I had an answer... I'm asking the same thing myself. Am I even running the same desktop that those using the Remix are?

Well I don't know apparently are the same.. I had both installed kubuntu 7.10 with kde4 and now i've kubuntu 8.04 kde4, in 8.04 some programs are newer and has more things than when i had the 7.10 but now i don't know if they are the same or not.. xD

Furthermore the global apparence is the same.

I think the problem is that the functionality of having stuff on the desktop has been taken away but it's yet to be replaced by anything equally useful. For the most part it's used for as a download/workspace for stuff so if the access to those things is improved (e.g. by showing *folders* open on the desktop or some other interface) I think we'll get used to it.

I don't think having individual icons as plasma on the desktop is much use for anything really but people differ.

first i'd like to mention that the upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 was the first one to go without a glitch!

now for my problem: (it started when i first installed KDE4) my volume buttons on HP Pavilion dv8000 are functioning, but when i click them i get a message that kmix is not running, but in fact it is, and the program runs it again...
