KDE4 and Ark

Has anybody noticed how Ark isn't quite up to speed as its predecessor? I've noticed these three things:

1. When Extracting and you specify a folder that hasn't been created, the old version would ask to create it. Under KDE4 it doesn't and appears to Extract when actually it didn't. This could also be tied to #2 below.

2. To get KDE4's version to Extract all files, you must highlight all files. Old version would automatically Extract all when no files were highlighted.

3. Once Extracted, any script file appear to not exist to the command line.

Particularly this applies to installing the Citrix client. Tried the same methods under GG KDE3.5.9 and all went normal.

I'm also not to thrilled with the limited "usability" of Desktop.

I miss right-click "extract here" shortcut also

I've always right-click Open With, but just checked. You're right, where is that? If I was use to that, I'd really miss it too.

how do you create archives of folders now? [in kde3.5 I used right-click on folder with files and "archive as zip, tar, whatever"]

I'm not sure. I've found the new Context menu quite lacking.

At the moment, as far as I can tell, the best method to do anything with a file on the KDE4 desktop is to open Dolphin, then open Desktop, then you can manipulate your file more or less like you could on the KDE3.5 desktop.

I don't know whether the old functionality of right-clicking on files on the desktop is coming back to KDE4 or not -- I kinda suspect not.

Up until now I have used "open with"->ark and then choosing/making a dir where to extract to.

Right clicking and choosing actions admin mode works when using dolphin kde3 (which is not present in kde4 alpha)

Yes, KDE 4 Ark is lacking - In the KDE 3.5 context (servce menus) are using Ark's build in options.

Compress Here - action (ark_compress.desktop) is using:

Exec=ark --add-to %u %u.tar.gz

This do not work with KDE 4 Ark. With 3.5 ark --help tells:

Options:
--extract Open extract dialogue, quit when finished
--extract-to Extract 'archive' to 'folder'. Quit when finished.
'folder' will be created if it does not exist.
--add Ask for the name of the archive to add 'files' to. Quit when finished.
--add-to Add 'files' to 'archive'. Quit when finished.
'archive' will be created if it does not exist.
--guess-name Used with '--extract-to'. When specified, 'archive'
will be extracted to a subfolder of 'folder'
whose name will be the name of 'archive' without the filename extension.

BUT with KDE 4 (/usr/lib/kde4/bin/ark --help) there are no options to use => no more context/service menus.

KDE 4 has combined service menu folder for Konqueror and Dolphin: services/ServiceMenus/. In Kubuntu, Dolphin and Konqueror service menus are in the /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus. More of the context/service menus: Topic: Service Menus with Dolphin.
