    KDE4 4.0.2 kbuildsycoca4 crashing on KDE4 splash screen

Hey everyone. I don't know if I'm the only one this is happening to, but I couldn't find any mention of it anywhere else on the net so I thought it would be OK to make a new thread.

Anyway, I upgraded today to KDE4 4.0.2 with no problems or broken packages, etc. But now on both my laptop (Intel 945G) and my desktop (nvidia, proprietary drivers) KDE4 crashes at the splash screen. I get multiple kcrash windows telling me kbuildsycoca causes a SIGABRT. After that the splash finishes, I get a few more kcrash windows, and everything either remains black, or I only see the KDM background. I have no idea what the problem might be, and kcrash claims its backtrace is useless.

    Thanks for any help!

    You looked too far away!

Probably this is a bug that will require that we simply wait for the fix to be distributed -- KDE4 is still very "developmental".

Hm, I saw that..but I didn't get any packages removed... Maybe this is just some unrelated bug.

Oh well, no more KDE4 goodness for me, it seems

I'm afraid to reboot mine! :P I'll just continue to "suspend to RAM" until I read that the fix is distributed.

For future reference have a look at what will be updated / removed before hitting the "go" button.

That has happened to me once too many times.

Well, yes thank you I knew that. But like I said nothing was being removed or showing up broken, etc. Just kde4 packages being updated. I only updated because they said it would fix many bugs (which I had encountered).

Anyone wanting to know, even deleting the ~/.kde4 folder did not help.

I'm exactly in the same situation as you, and purging (apt-get autoremove, then removing Residual Config through Synaptic) / reinstalling kde4-core didn't help.

So far I haven't found any bug reports related, I've tried setting KDEDIR and KDEDIRS, and if you run kbuildsycoca4 from CLI you'll get the same result.

                  From http://linux.die.net/man/8/kbuildsycoca4 :
kbuildsyscoca4, as part of the KDE command line tools ensures the proper operation of KDE by reading in all the .desktop, .directory, .kimgio and .protocol files to constructs a binary database.

KDE itself accesses this database during operation to provide configuration information a program needs to run.

This tool is part of ksycoca, which stands for KDE System Configuration Cache
I'm running KDE 3.5.9 along with KDE 4.x (or at least trying :P )

My upgrades in GG / synaptic still show those packages (kdebase-workspace, etc) as wanting to be purged purged. I will wait for now. No rush.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. I'm getting the same error output you are getting at the end there.

Thanks for opening a bug report on it, I have no idea how to do it and was gonna ask here. Hopefully this gets noticed.

I have exactly problem like yours in Kubuntu Hardy AMD64 and Kubuntu Gutsy i386 after upgrading with apt at 2008-03-04. After that I can't start KDE4 and a lot of programs for KDE4 in KDE3.5.
Today must be released alpha6, I hope they fixes this bug in it...
