    KDE 4 issues?

    Hi

I've been a Ubuntu user since 7.04 first came out. I decided to give Kubuntu 7.10 a whirl so I did a clean install last night and I like it so far.

I really want to try KDE4 but I've seen some postings on this board from folks who have had problems going from KDE 3.5 to 4, so I haven't done that yet.

    - Are there any pre-update things I can do to head off problems before jumping into updating to KDE4?
    - Is there a rock-sloid method for updating to KDE4 and using it exclusively?

    Thanks
    El

    Note that:

KDE 4 is total rewrite of KDE (Think it as separate desktop, not continuum of KDE 3.5)

KDE 4 is at the moment experimental (someone might call it beta).

    Warning
Beta version of KDE are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Beta versions of KDE ARE recommended for developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

If you want usable desktop => KDE 3.5.X

And KDE 3.5 is not dead:

Ah, I see For some reason, all the hype made me believe that KDE4 was in final release.

Sounds like I should just be content to explore what I currently have, which is not a bad thing at all.

      Thanks!

Actually, as of the 4.0.1 update for KDE 4, I have found it to be quite stable for use on a daily basis. Granted it is not perfect, but then again, neither is KDE 3 or any other OS for that matter.

In any case, I would definitely consider installing it alongside KDE 3. If not to use primarily, then at least to ooh and ahh at the sexy visuals and sleek interface and to see what is in KDE's future...

        Hope that helps!

Well, I never got that far .....

I did a clean install of Kubuntu 7.10 and everything was fine until I let the update of 130 files happen.... after that, reboot took almost 4 minutes and I could never get my wireless networking working again.

So I did another clean install and another update..... and it happened again

So now I'm on Mint 4.0 with the Kubuntu Desktop installed.

          I'm really disappointed because I didn't want to have a Gnome/KDE mixture.

My laptop is a Presario 2170us with a Linksys wireless card..... this is the first time I've ever had a problem with a variant of Ubuntu.

          Any suggestions?

            Re: KDE 4 issues?

Well, KDE 4 isn't a standalone operating system, but a desktop environment for use with an existing UNIX based (in most cases, Linux) operating system...

As their website states, "Together with a free implementation of UNIX such as GNU/Linux, UNIX/KDE constitutes a completely free and open computing platform available to anyone free of charge."

As far as your installation issues I would suggest doing the following:
            - Reinstall Kubuntu 7.10 from scratch.
            - Login to the KDE 3 desktop
            - Run Konsole (or Terminal) and type: sudo apt-get install kde4
            - Reboot; choose KDE4 and login.

Also, how did you try to install KDE4 before? Adept? Synaptic? Konsole?
I ask because I had issues trying to update it with Adept, and used a combination of Synaptic Package Manager and Konsole commands to get the job done.

Finally, I looked up your laptop's specs and (if you haven't upgraded it at all) your laptop is a lower-end Presario. KDE4 implements a lot of new graphical upgrades, so if you only have 256mb of RAM and a 2GHz Celeron processor as the specs indicate, that might be your problem right there.
As a tech guy, I can tell you that those processors are notorious for their poor performance. I am running KDE4 on a Dell laptop with a 1.8ghz Pentium 4, which is much faster than even your 2.0ghz Celeron, simply because of key differences in the way each processor is built (google "Celeron processors are slow" for more information).
That said, I would stick with KDE3, as it is less hardware intensive, and will still be supported for quite a while.

            Hope that helps!

              Re: KDE 4 issues?

I never got far enough along to even try KDE4. I've had to abandon Kubuntu completely, unfortunately

              I'm using a Linksys WPC54G wireless card.

The live CD saw it fine so I did a clean install of Kubuntu. When I did the post-install reboot, my wireless card was still seen.
....but when I did the post-install updates, they went about half-way and suddenly my card wasn't seen anymore, so the updates wouldn't finish.

I did another reboot and was wireless card wasn't even detected as hardware.

I've gone back to Ubuntu 7.10, where I never had any of these problems.

                Re: KDE 4 issues?

                Hey ElEdwards,

You can try to hook up your system with a cable to your modem/router so the updates will finish and install. During the update after a fresh kubuntu install you also get a new kernel. The driver and other software for the wireless card is linked to the kernel, so if it is updated it needs to reconfigure/install the wireless drivers. Maybe the update needs to be online to get your wireless running and that way you end up in a deadlock.
                Maybe it helps.

Ah Ha! I hadn't thought of that...but now that you'd said it, I can see the logic. OK, I'll try again.... but this time with a hard connection.

(...but still, I never had this issue with Ubuntu 7.10)

                    Re: KDE 4 issues?

                    Hmm... that's interesting.
It seems to me that despite which method I used to install updates, it downloads all of the updates first, then applies the updates.

So if one of the updates is killing your wireless connection, it should be happening AFTER the updates have all been downloaded.

Again I am curious - by which method are you trying to update your system?
Adept? Synaptic? the konsole or terminal?
Some other package manager I'm unaware of?

                      Re: KDE 4 issues?

I'm guessing that this thread has evolved to a different topic regarding Installing Kubuntu ..... but anyway....

moktoman, I try to do the Fresh-install-updates by simply clicking on the Adept triangle that shows in the Task Bar.

Last night, I tried another clean install with a hard cable to my router instead of using the wireless card....and the result was the same:
After reboot, I clicked on the Adept triangle and the update started, went to 100%, then the install of the updates began, got to about 50% with a message saying something about a package interrupting Adept... I clicked OK and the update ended... and once again after reboot, my wireless card is not detected. The only Network component that shows after the update is the built-in ethernet port. The wireless card, of course, plugs into the PCMCIA slot.

Could this 7.10 version of Kubuntu be too much for my laptop? Should I try the 7.04 version? If so, where do I get that?

Ubuntu 7.10 hasn't given me any trouble at all on this laptop.
                      It's a Compaq Presario 2170us with 512Meg of Mem.

By the way, I've tried KDE on other Ubuntu derivatives I've had on this laptop (Ubuntu, Mint, Ultimate) by installing Kubuntu-desktop and that has always worked, too. I just can't successfully complete the installation of Kubuntu 7.10.

                      Thanks.

Pablar, don't hijack other peoples' topics.
                          C'mon now...

BTW, go to System Settings, then Appearance, then Fonts.

Click 'Adjust all Fonts' and check the size box, then make your adjustments.
Also, you can try switching 'Force fonts DPI' in the Fonts dialog to 120 DPI.

                          Hope that helps.

Sorry about hijacking someone else's post. I did not realize i was doing that. I thought I was in the kde 4 help area and this is where I ask the question. I have been reading non-stop on Kde-4 for a week now and did not read the forum rules this was my first forum post and I thought that this was where you ask kde 4 questions. I guess I need to read about how to do this too. I now have a head ache LOL.

Thanks for the help, I already tried that first. I hate being a noob! I am frustrated with kde-4 at this point. I need to get away from it for a bit. I need a book!

P.S. I properly reposted my question in a new topic. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, they should only call it a beta at this point. Too many problems. The really cool thing is that Kubuntu allows you to install it and then log onto it to check it out. If it does not work then, you can easily log out and log back in to kde 3.5.
