    KDE 4 annoyances

Post your annoyances here! > and solutions

    1. Every time I start a KDE4 session it shows my widgets/icons but gives a white background. if i right click and select config desktop it displays my chosen wallpaper and i have to click apply and it displays it.

    2. why do i have to tell it i want to log out or restart my computer twice? once on the K menu then on the pop up box?

    Re: KDE 4 annoyances

Are you on gutsy or hardy?

For 1) try going into system settings->advanced->session manager and choose: choose "manually configured" session. Now log out and back in. Go back to the session manager and choose "last session" (or similar as mine is in german). Some times it works sometimes it doesn't. this will probably be resolved soon. I haven't had this issue for a while.

For 2) This is the same as in kde 3.5.xxx you choose log off (or something again mine is in german) fron the kmenu or by right clicking on the desktop and get a window where you can choose exactly what you wish to do)

Um, the one thing I can't do is get into any root mode regarding systemsettings-kde4

I can get root access to other programs.

      my post http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3090676.0

I did install from the kde4 live cd.

Have you tried installing kdesudo? It worked for me, albeit from kde4 installed on gutsy/hardy.

          Re: KDE 4 annoyances

          Yeah, I have that installed.

I stopped kdm and purged core-kde4 kde4 kdesudo systemsettings-kde4 with aptitude

          then I reinstalled these.

Same friggin' issue. Anyone else with ideas how to resolve this issue?

I installed from the kde4 live cd, Gutsy. Maybe I should upgrade the system to Hardy? That would be a double blade...

            Re: KDE 4 annoyances

Here is a question I have regarding systemsettings-kde4:

Is there an administrator mode showing for anyone for those applets requiring root privileges?

            Sub question:
I do get the Deadlock (what the "H-E-double hockey sticks" is this? - Just run the %^$! program) issue when I try to launch kwrite-kde4 from terminal; however, if I launch it from the root mode of a file manager, it just launches.

            Bueler? Bueler? Anyone? Anyone?

Add to it that I can launch systemsettings-kde in krusader (root mode) if I navigate to /usr/bin and type in systemsettings-kde4

I can log out, log back in in terminal, then sudo su, enter root mode, stop kdm, startx and log in as root, then systemsettings works fine and of course there are no restrictions. I can deal, but if am running something, then I have to dump it or wait for it to finish (i.e. downloading or something).

              Re: KDE 4 annoyances

              another coulpe of small annoyances:

when starting kate-kde4, terminal-kde4 and some other apps from the plasmoid in the panel I get this:
KDEInit kann "/usr/bin/kate-kde4" nicht starten. (KDEInit will not start "/usr/bin/kate-kde4")

The app starts and works fine. Must be something in the background

Another thing is when I open file manager KDE 4 (konqueror kde4 from the favorites I get two instances of Konqueror with my /home/user files??

                Re: KDE 4 annoyances

I'm getting some of the same problems posted here. Mainly the kdesudo systemsettings-kde4 issue and also the notice when i start kate-kde4 or kwrite-kde4 from the terminal.

I also have a problem that sometimes when I make changes to the the advanced desktop settings (i.e. all of the eye candy), the changes are not saved.

What I would really love to see happen soon though is the ability for the taskbar to only show the windows on the current desktop.

                  Re: KDE 4 annoyances

Workaround if you want to run systemsettings-kde4 with root privileges:

In File Manager - Root Mode
                  navigate to /user/lib/kde4/bin
                  click the systemsettings executable

I installed Krusader, so using root mode with that, there is a "terminal" entry field at the bottom, I navigate to /user/bin then I just type ./systemsettings-kde4

It launches with full root privileges from there also.

I also installed the systemsetting from kde3, as I wanted a gui for setting up my printer. The applet for the network, although it just shows as an empty icon, lets you see your network devices.

                      Re: KDE 4 annoyances

I had a similar problem with kde4 on gutsy. I went into kde3.5.8 and renamed the ./kde4 (hidden file) and re logged into kde4. Changed the desktop background without the desktop advanced effects active and no widgets on the screen. logged out and back in again then added the widgets I wanted. Note not all of them work stably so you have to experiment. The ones that run well on my system are: analog clock, notes and lancelot.

Now for my anoiances. whenever opening things like: system settings kde3 or my flies (mine is in german) I get two instances of either sys settings or konqueror kde4.

Starting some apps like kate kde3 from the panel still gives me an error message as mentioned before.

Apps in favorites like kde4-dolphin, kde4-system settings and kde4-konqbrowser won't start up in kde4 on HH. I'll try the kde4 version in GG and report back.

Edit: I just checked in GG and the same apps have icons (missing in the HH version) and start up just fine.
The personal files start up fine as well. Just system settings(kde3) still gives me two instances.

Something in KDE4 is using my soundcard constantly.. I can't get ALSA to let me use the input. JACK reports that something is using HW 0,0

Until I install KDE4 the card works flawlessly. IT's an M-Audio Audiophile (delta) 2496

                          Re: KDE 4 annoyances

I have added some application icons to my panel. However when I click on them, they do not launch. Nothing happens. My desktop icons also do not launch. The latter seemed to happen after I switched to double-click for opening apps. Even if I go back to single click, now, it does not help. If I remove ~/.kde4, things are back to normal, but I loose all my settings. After doing the same configurations, I'm back to the same situation, where desktop and panel icons do not launch apps, single or double click. Any ideas?

Maybe it's the order that you're doing everything in? How about switching to double click first and then put the icons on your panel?

You've probably tried that already.. but if not it's an idea.

The app / panel icons don't always work as fast as the nes we are used to in kde3.4.xx
some like FF and TB ned a second of attention. Otthers like kate open but give you an error message.
Still others like FF and kate won't let you switch between the two from the panel. You have to close one to open the other.

All of this also depends on if you have desktop effects activated or not.

Kde4 is still very young and growing quickly
