    Lowest Resource Usage

I have a celeron PC that I am currently running Kubuntu on, but it seems to run so slow. It is around 500 MHz if I recall correctly. What linux distro would run the quickest on that machine. 128 MB of RAM or maybe 64 MB. Thanks

Another distro to look at is Yoper. I have had it installed on my wifes laptop (Compaq Armada 7400 P2 300 128MB) and it flies. You can really tell the difference when you install something like Kubuntu or SuSE. Yoper 2.1 is the one that I normally install, unfortunately the distro is not as well supported as Kubuntu, its more a hobby distro with the main hobbiest having moved on to pastures new at Novell, but version 2.2 is coming and promises to be even better.
KDE 3.5 RC1 and Dapper Drake....waiting for it to implode

Thanks for the ideas. I just burned the DSL iso but it doesn't seem to be working. I am going to try and mess around with it later after work. I'll let you know how it does.

You can install Kubuntu, with the /server (I think) parameter, so only the basics are installed.

And you should try to recompile the kernel to make it optimized for Celeron. It really works. I did the same for a PIII machine, and Kubuntu was really fast.

Ok I installed DSL, but I am not digging it. I went ahead and put Kubuntu back on. I will try to compile it when I get home. That may help. I may just turn it into windows 2000 and change my current windows machine to kubuntu only (currently it dual boots). Also is there a Mathmatica program for linux. I need that for school, but I would rather just get rid of windows all together.

              thanks

If by mathematica you mean OpenOffice.org math, then yes. Post a link of what mathematica is (google search didn't help me find it, but I found latin words!)

http://www.wolfram.com/ that is where you can find mathematica. It is a very complex program for solving difficult math problems. Problems not able to be done by hand, or at least not in a timely fashion.

                    Re: Lowest Resource Usage

I usually grab rcconf from the universe repository, and use that to toggle all the unneeded services to the off position. Makes a remarkable difference in speed.
