It's not common sense if the masks don't work, and they don't. Common sense told us that.
Lost in the firestorm over what Dr. Anthony Fauci knew about the possibility that his agency was funding research that might have allowed COVID-19 to escape from a Chinese lab was a bit of a bombshell: The nation?s preeminent infectious disease expert never really believed that mask-wearing was effective.

In an email to former Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell on February 5, 2020?as concerns over the new Coronavirus in China were just starting to make their way to the United States? Fauci assured her that wearing a mask was unnecessary.

'Masks are really for infected people to prevent them from spreading infection to people who are not infected rather than protecting uninfected people from acquiring infection,? he wrote. ?The typical mask you buy in the drug store is not really effective at keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through the material.'

A little more than a month later, he said the same thing publicly in an interview with ?60 Minutes.?

'Right now in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks,' he said.
'You're sure of it'? asked CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook. 'Because people are listening really closely to this.'

    Fauci was adamant.

'There's no reason to be walking around with a mask,' he answered. 'When you're in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it's not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences, people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.'

Three days later, though, Fauci's advice went unheeded as mass panic took over when the NBA suspended its season and Tom Hanks announced he had contracted the virus. Masks started getting hoarded right along with hand sanitizer and toilet paper.
That masks didn't stop virons was taught to me in grad school and it is what I taught my microbiology students for more than a decade. Outside this political fiasco that is still a fact.

During 2020 the 3M N95PM2.5 mask (BTW, the "N" means "non-oily environment, and the 95 means 95% effective at blocking Particulate Matter 2.5 microns (2,500 nm) or larger, which are more than 25 times larger than the 100 nm diameter of the covid viron. Since there were not enough 3M N95 masks available for the general population the FDA gave the KN95 masks from China an EUA (Emergency Use Authorization). However, as Wikipedia reported:
KN95 respirators of China are expected to meet at least 95% filtration.[9] However, NIOSH found that some products labeled as "KN95" failed to meet these standards, some of them filtering out as little as one percent.[10] Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada require such KN95 products failing to meet the filtration standards to be re-labeled as "face masks" instead of "respirators",[11][12] when being sold in the U.S. and Canada.
A search of Amazon for KN95 masks shows all are listed as "face masks". Now, this is to say nothing of the stupidity of making a mask out of a bandana or cotton shirt. Those kinds of masks filter little to no covid virons.

But, hand washing? The same CDC study which I linked to in a post above, gave more weight to hand hygiene but added that "the effect of hand hygiene combined with face masks on laboratory-confirmed influenza was not statistically significant." Remember, that study is based on ALL RTCs published between 1946 and July of 2018.

What I find really disturbing in all of this is why the most technically powerful and industrialized country in the world, after a year and a half, still can not manufacture N95 masks that do meet NIOSH standards. It is as if the PTB wanted us to use Chinese KN95 masks.

I have studied masks. I understand what happens at the viral level vs various types of masks.

Please be patient. He is following my directions as I/we attempt to isolate the cause of the issues he (specifically; NO one else is experiencing/has reported what he is dealing with here in KFN). I'll delete the posts, as I've gotten what I need to know from them.

            What does that mean?
            -------------------------------------

@GG, I understand the point that a mask should ideally be able to filter out the relevant pathogen by virtue of the mask's porosity (and that a mask should be well-fitting).

But one thing puzzles me: why does wearing a mask, even non-N95 masks, make it harder for the mask wearer to breathe? Doesn't that imply some sort of filtration at play?

Meanwhile, in India we're far, far away from fully vaccinating even 10% of the population. Deaths due to delta+ are being reported. Fears of the "third wave" are being expressed in the MSM.

Vaccines currently available here, in theory, are the AstraZeneca one (made here as Covishield), a local one based on inactivated whole corona virus, and the Russian-made Sputnik. Talks are "in progress" with Pfizer: a sticking point appears to be the indemnity clause.

            -------------------------------------
Re. "Linux Foundation starts vaccine passport company", we already have something akin to vaccine passports in India where each vaccination is recorded and linked to a person's unique ID and a certificate is issued.

I wonder how many more vaccine passport companies will appear and how many passports an active individual may need

Impeding the flow of air through a mask isn't the same as filtering nano-meter particles from the air, otherwise the implication would be that the mask is filtering diatomic molecules (O2, N2, CO2), which obviously it can't. The exhaled air is higher in CO2 and lower in O2 than the inhaled air, and the physical effort to pull air in and out through the mask produces fatigue, quicker in some, slower in others. It all depends on their physical conditioning.

The NIOSH approved N95 mask is called a "respirator" mask because it is designed to create a seal all around the nose and mouth. This kind of mask has elastic bands that go behind the head and pull tightly on the mask, forcing it against the face. It is very uncomfortable and is not recommended for long term wearing. Medical personnel which require filtered breathing for all day use wear variations of a hazmat suit. When mass testing began taking place here in America it was common to see nurses that were taking throat cultures wearing a plastic body suit with hood that was being fed air filtered by an electrically powered pump. Filters which are so fine and dense that when you wear one you cannot smell the bacon you are frying, and which can easily filter 0.1 nm particles, are true "respirators" by virtue of their use of electrically powered air pumps. A P4 facility uses hazmat suits which have force air on the intake and a vacuum pump on the output.

The ear loops on a KN95 mask, or any other mask which uses ear loops, cannot sustain a constant air-tight seal around the mouth and nose.

While we had mask mandates here in Lancaster county I wore a mask because stores were required by an edict from the mayor and county supervisors which required the stores to not let you in without a mask. As a Christian I obey all laws that do not conflict with my Faith or my God given Rights as expressed in the Constitution and the Bill of Right. Remember those?

To be blunt, the mask is not about covid, it is about power. The mandates were imposed to cancel free speech and rights of peaceful civic and religious assembly, to curtail business, transportation of goods, cancellation of services, and to increase citizens dependency on the government. You can't go to church to worship, even while in cars in your church's parking lot with the preacher speaking to you via a short range FM radio, but it was OK here in Lancaster County to visit various stores and bars, etc. The Mayor even canceled school sporting events to protect the children (even though fewer than 1,000 children between the ages of 5-24 died of covid during the last 18 months), but her daughter and friends could go to a tennis match and participate. Gov Newsome threw a bar owner in jail for having a party of his family and friends at his closed down bar, while Newsome and his 12 closest friends wined and dined in a room 12' square without masks or hand washing etiquette. Rules for thee but not for me.

This is obvious from the "WOKE" condition of many social organizations, corporations or businesses and 503c organizations which are also pushing Marxism while claiming to be fighting "Nazis" or "White Supremacy" (i.e., anyone who doesn't agree with them). They are pushing to establish equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity. Outcome can be dictated, which is easier than establishing opportunity.

I have also been lectured to that because I am White that I am and have been a racist from birth. IOW, Martin Luther King was apparently mistaken. We can not judge a person by of the content of his character, which he can improve, but by the color of his skin, over which he had/has no control. How insane is that? And how insane is the ideology which espouses that? Bat poo crazy, to borrow a covid symbolism.

I have no argument about your second and third paras but I'll get back with some (crazy) thoughts about the first later today.

As for the rest, I've been following events pretty closely and things aren't pretty.

Matt Taibi has this from the publicly available part of his substack:
                ...
The drug has become a test case for a controversy that’s long been building in health care, about how much input patients should have in their own treatment. Well before Covid-19, the medical profession was thrust into a revolution in patient information, inspired by a combination of Google and new patients’ rights laws.

Should people on their deathbeds be allowed to try anything to save themselves? That seems like an easy question to answer. Should the entire world be allowed to practice self-care on a grand scale? That’s a different issue. Some would say absolutely not, while others would say the corruption of pharmaceutical companies and the medical system unfortunately make it a necessity. The world is increasingly divided along this trust/untrust axis.

Chimak111, in America there are financial reasons for a hospital to not allow the use of Ivermectin or HCQ. Prior to covid around 400+ mostly rural hospitals were facing or going bankrupt,or shutting down their ER services, because of the flood of illegal immigrants being given access to medical services free of charge. Federal Law dictated that they post a sign in several languages stating that if they cannot pay for services they don't have to pay for them, in so many words. At the beginning of the "pandemic" Congress passed the CARES Act. Sec 3719, and other places, gave hospitals an "add-on" to their covid patient bills. If the bill was for $1,000 the Feds would add an additional amount. The amounts for covid patients were "weighted" to add on 20%. IF the patient was put into ICU and onto a ventilator the weighting factor was more complicated but the amount was considerably more, somethings 40% or higher. It was to the hospital's advantage to keep the patients in the ICU as long as the could.

                  (a) IN GENERAL.—Section 1886(d)(4)(C) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1395ww(d)(4)(C)) is amended by adding at the end
                  the following new clause:
‘‘(iv)(I) For discharges occurring during the emergency period described in section 1135(g)(1)(B), in the case of a discharge of
an individual diagnosed with COVID–19, the Secretary shall increase the weighting factor that would otherwise apply to the
diagnosis-related group to which the discharge is assigned by 20 percent.
BTW, it has been shown that taking 10,000 units of Vitamin D3 either prevents Covid or reduces the severity of its symptoms, especially if you are Black. Taking more than that can lead to hypercalcemia.

Now I realise this is not really the place,
but, since I'm having (you can imagine) quite a hard time talking common sense in other places,
I was just wondering what I consider to be a bunch of altogether sensible people would think.

                    - About masks (if we take the "real danger" tenet to be... real ;-) - they do make sense. In the sense... they won't really stop the pathogen to get to you if someone tries really hard to sneeze in your face, but if you half-heartedly try to sneeze in someone else's face, it mostly will.

                    - About young people having to wear them... again, of course, even if they get sick, the risk is "reasonable" - for them. If they then proceed to sneeze in grandad's face, without a mask, it might certainly be a problem.

About the "real danger". Take the USA. One of the worst hit countries. They had 1,800 deaths per million. In - give or take - 18 months.
That's one death in ten thousand per month. Worldwide, it's 500 deaths per million. In 18 months.
Now, is that serious? Yes. Is it panic-worth? IMO, no.

Does it justify putting everyone in masks? Again, IMO, no. Which might be even worse that wrecking economies, causing mass economic dire straits, possibly killing more people (through starvation, suicide, reduced health care, and crime) and almost certainly harming more. People in masks are unhappy. General creativity goes through the floor. But then people in masks get a clear message: shut up or else.

                    Now, as someone recently said,
"We would need some sort of essay in the style of Parkinson's Law or The Peter Principle, on self-immerdating* systems like journalism and politics :-/. Something like, 'the rate of self-immerdation in informational and legislative systems is inversely proportional to the general state of mental health'... or something :?)"

Now, about the Linux foundation trying to speculate on this... I find that less than acceptable.

                    * I hope the concept of "self-immerdation" is clear enough, I'd be glad to clarify it if it isn't.

Also, we've seen in the past the distortion of science for political purposes. It was called Lysenkoism. Today we are seeing the same nonsense in "Global Warming", which tries to make CO2 an enemy of the planet. That is utter nonsense, of course, because Plants and mammals are in a symbiotic relationship in which, with the aid of Sunlight and water, green plants convert CO2 into O2 and sugar. We eat the sugar for food and breath O2 to live, expelling CO2 and water. "Exhaled human breath typically consists of around 40,000 ppm to 50,000 ppm of CO2, a fact that should make one wonder about the campaign to demonize CO2 as a ?pollutant.? Without strong ventilation, CO2 levels in rooms filled with lots of people commonly reach 2000 ppm with no apparent ill effects. On a calm summer day, CO2 concentrations in a corn field can drop to 200 ppm or less, because the growing corn sucks so much CO2 out of the air. The US Navy tries to keep CO2 levels in submarines below 5000 ppm to avoid any measurable effect on sailors and NASA sets similar limits for humans in spacecraft..."

NASA has established that the Earth is greening due to the higher levels of CO2.

One of my clients years ago, in the 80's, was a feedlot in Eastern Colorado. I computerized their manual California Net Energy Maintenance System for controlling feeding of cattle in feed lots. They had a building on their lot the size of a two car garage which was air conditioned, and the walls were lined with fluorescent grow-lites. The co2 in the air was pumped up to 4000 ppm. The 7 foot vertical tray stacks, on rollers, had six trays each of oats densely planted. Within 7 days each tray would develop into a very dense, about 1 foot thick, dark green mat of oat sprouts. The trays were hydroponic and the water was inoculated with fertilizers and plant hormones. To generate 20 lbs of fodder per calf people are in the hydroponic garage all the time. CO2 is 10X the outside air, but O2 generated by the fodder is higher too. 4000ppm of CO2 was/is harmless to mammals. An increase in greening around the planet is also increasing the O2 around the world as well.

Temperature and CO2 for the last 600 million years.

On AGW, you might want to read my old notes (2013).
That is indeed the prime example of informational... downward spiralling into deeper and deeper pits of darkness.
All models have repeatedly failed. No even vague proof - let alone indication - has been ever offered that CO2 in those concentrations acts as a greenhouse gas. Sea levels haven't really risen anywhere. But, it's settled science, and if you try and talk a minimum of common sense, you're a heretic and the Inquisition snaps your head off. Sad.

IMO, both Covid and AGW were and are vehicles for the Extreme Left, i.e., Marxists, to exert control over the lives of everyone else in their quest to stamp out the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Marxists solution to ALL problems is to replace those documents with their Manifesto. Over 20% of the members of Congress are Marxists ("Progressive Congressional Caucasus") hiding behind the "Progressive" label. Several senators, like Pelosi, Schumer, and several others attend that group's meetings. Their political party is the same political party which oppressed people in the old South because of their skin color, pushed birth control to wipe them out, and are now claiming that because of their skin color all Whites are racists from birth and remain so all the rest of their lives. Their current plantations are called "Ghettos" and exist in large metropolitan areas that have been controlled by the Left for over 50 years and yet still blame all the problems in those areas on Conservatives.

I'm done now, and the chorus says "Thank God!"
