Today, I got an update for Google Chrome:

I don't remember seeing anything nearly like "After this operation, 19.9 MB of additional disk space will be used." for a browser update.

The browser works but the additional disk space is puzzling.

Not sure what you're asking here;

The "After this operation.." message? I see that every time I install or upgrade something.

The size of Chrome-Browser? My current one is about 250MB so 18-19 seems reasonable.

The difference 1.5MB between the downloaded size vs. the "additional space used..."? I would guess a decompression when installing? Just a guess.


Try this in konsole for some info:

dpkg-query -Wf '${Installed-Size}\t${Package}\n' | sort -n | grep google-chrome-stable

Chrome is likely the largest package on your system at about 233MB

I think it is the (relatively speaking) larger than expected extra disk space used after the update? Also, considering the source adds to the mystery if this were Firefox,or Virtualbox or something, it might not have been noticed so much

Today's update including the Brave browser:

Brave is based on Chromium 89.0.4389.72.

Side-note: if one doesn't set Brave as the default, reminders are supposed to be limited to "the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, and 20th launches" (Source).
