58 years ago today ...

the 16th of December, 1962, at 3:00PM, my bride and I were married!

It was a sunny Sunday with a clear blue sky in Gothenburg, NE. The afternoon temp was 72F. My soon-to-be father-in-law ushered me up the steps of the church building with a shotgun! . After the wedding we drove to Kearney where she was attending college. The next day, Monday, a blizzard blew into town.

We celebrated today by cooking a pizza and an apple pie, washing them down with V8.

For the last few weekends we've been watching Christmas love stories on the ION channel.

It seems like it was just yesterday...

Happy Anniversary to you and the missus GG. When we got married we didn't have a honeymoon and were pretty tired after the day's affair so we went home and ordered a pizza. For many years after we celebrated by getting pizza on our anniversaries.

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, GG, so belated happy anniversary! That's quite a feat, especially these days, to be married for so long. I think it's awesome.

Over the years, from things you've said, I've found it very heartwarming that you and your wife are so devoted to each other, and are each other's best friend. I remember when she wasn't doing well...at all...and it was so scary. I'm very happy for you that you're still together.

BTW, and I know no one's going to believe this, but you got married on my best friend's BIRTHday. I mean December 16, 1962. I can have her send me a pic of her driver's license if needed!

All the credit goes to Mrs GG. She's proved her sainthood by staying with me this long. For a third of those years I was an arrogant, egotistical knot head.

DYK, she has given me and our kids a couple of good scares, but now we both just suffer the vagaries of old age, just like all who are our age. Honestly, considering all the insane things I did in my youth, and chance occurrences afterward, I never imagined I'd live to see 78, much less remain married. Now, we just enjoy life one day at a time, come what may.

That's all any of us can do, really. For me, having gone through multiple, big health crises, including nearly dying twice--the first time at only 22--that's pretty much been my credo.

It kind of irks me when I see people wasting their lives away, thinking they're indestructible and/or they're going to live forever so what's the hurry? NO ONE is guaranteed another tomorrow. *shrug*

What was I doing when I was 58? ... That would be in 1999. In Sept of 1998 I had just switched to SuSE 5.3 because it featured KDE 1.0 Beta. In 1999 I was enjoying KDE while working for a state gov agency. My son was hired during that year and and about 10 years later I retired and he became supervisor of the dept we were both programming for. He's still there, still supervising, although all of his work has been done from home for the past year. He HATES remote programming and supervising.

There was a period of time, about 10-15 years ago, when my wife and I were attending a lot of funerals. Eventually, almost everyone older than us passed on. Now, at the head of the line, we have one request to make: STOP SHOVING!
