if Ubuntu was ever to disappear.

    Hi
well, we see this stuff kind of randomly but it appeared in a RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT over at Distrowatch for a a new Mint.

    https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=10834

availability of a new beta version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, a platform which provides Mint-specific packages and technology while using the Debian distribution as its foundation. "This is the beta release for LMDE 4 'Debbie'. LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'.

Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear.
    So, opinions..?

is this.FUD or is something really going on "behind the scenes"?

    inquiring minds want to know!

That is not new, LMDE has been around for quite a while now. 2010 at least.

Ubuntu takes Debian, and makes it significantly simpler and easier to set up and use. Mint takes Ubuntu and modifies it a little (relatively speaking). So they modify a modification of Debian. LMDE is a way to do what Ubuntu does to Debian, plus what Mint does to Ubuntu. It is not like what Ubuntu does is a special secret process done behind closed doors. Before they began development on Cinnamon and the like, Mint was Just Another Ubuntu Respin.
