[SOLVED] Thinking of hopping from Neon to Kubuntu

    Hi Guys!

Running KDE Neon here and I have been getting huge updates for days. Have you guys on Kubuntu been getting continuous updates?

It reminds me of the bad old days running Window 7. I don't think I need the very latest OS stuff. Now that AppImages and such are available all I need is a stable LTS version that I don't have to futze with very often.

I started out on Linux Mint/Cinnamon about 4 or 5 years ago and it was a "safe" place that looks much like Windows 7. However, I got tired of the outdated software (latest Kdenlive was 4 years old) and crashy video editors, so moved to a very cutting edge, often updated KDE Neon.

Also, the guys over on the Ubuntu Forum very tersely say Neon is NOT an approved distribution! Is there some Nicene war going on?

      Hi Vinny,

KDE Neon User Edition. I don't need extra drama...

To me a lot of the updates look like they are for video. And they keep being released for download over and over again. A calmer distro appeals to me right now.

BTW, until I installed Kubuntu in a VM I didn't realize there was a minimal install option. Very nice.

That's their policy. Questions re. official flavors go into Ubuntu Official Flavours Support, those related to the version in development have the Ubuntu Development Version sub-forum, and "not official" flavors or distros have Other Operating Systems. No harm in that.

But why would you want to seek help there for Kubuntu or KDE Neon!

Re. the number of updates in KDE neon, the developers have made their aims pretty clear. A reading of the FAQ makes that clear right at the very beginning:

        What is KDE neon?

KDE neon is a rapidly updated software repository
If there's something in the FAQ that you find confusing or ambiguous, post about it here. People could then fix things.

I use neon unstable, which as you can imagine get updates a few times a day.
I turned off update notifications in the panel, and I just update whenever I feel like it.
One thing I noticed, I was back on Kubuntu 18.04 for a couple of days, and that updates the xapian index (update-apt-xapi) quite a few times a day, which hogs resources and is annoying.
On neon, it never runs, except just after I update.
Also, on K18 I often see an "unattended-upgrades" process running, on neon unstable, never.
So, even though it is develop/unstable, it's actually less annoying and resource-hogging than K18 which is LTS.

Well, it is either "where the heck is my Plasma update, it is two hours since release

or " why so many updates??"

Use what suits you best, that is always the best path.

Of course these regularly scheduled updates are the main reason to use Neon.

https://community.kde.org/Schedules/Plasma_5 >>> Plasma is updated approx once every two weeks, last was....yesterday
https://community.kde.org/Schedules/Frameworks >>> Frameworks are updated approx once a month, last release was 8 June
https://community.kde.org/Schedules/...lease_Schedule >>> Applicatiions are updated approx once a month, last release was 6 June

Yeah, Neon gets a few, for sure, but they are many but mostly tiny packages. You get the same number of them when Kubuntu updates, if they update. This pace is not really much different that using Kubuntu and using the Backports PPA, as many here do.

My updates today (I did not update yesterday) are only 279mb, and a good chunk of that, size-wise was an Ubuntu kernel update. as well as firefox and chrome.

Also, the guys over on the Ubuntu Forum very tersely say Neon is NOT an approved distribution! Is there some Nicene war going on?
Well, they are right. Neon is not an official 'flavour' of Ubuntu, just like Mint, and many other distros that use an Ubuntu base. They can't really be expected to know what distro has customized which part of the base, especially as there are literally dozens of them.

I went to several forums seeking a solution to get my Canon AIO scanner to work. You folks here have always been responsive, helpful and friendly but were not able to solve it. The KDE forums have always been the least responsive, taking four days to get one unhelpful response. Most of the help came from the Ubuntu Forum. I posted my solution on all the forums where I asked the question including here where I started my quest.

I understand why they have to limit the scope of their support but don't understand why they have to be so terse and unfriendly. I'm glad you folks are welcoming and inclusive to KDE Neon users. Next time I go to the Ubuntu Forums I will edit my profile dropping the KDE Neon OS - going "incognito." They did help but the admins were unfriendly. I spelled MS Windows "M$ Windoze" and it was immediately spell corrected and I was warned not to do that again. Wow - and I thought I was a grumpy old man!

Last year I failed to reboot after an update and saw some anomalies. Since then I have automatically rebooted after all updates as a matter of habit.

Somehow, it never occurred to me that I could ignore an update for a few days. The notifier turns red when a security update is available so that would be an acceptable change for me.

                    Thanks, everyone, for your help.

90ish percent of Kubuntu/KDEneon is Ubuntu. As long as your issue isn't DE related, why not search or ask at Ubuntu based forums?
