    Hdcp?

Hey you guys have been really excellent to me and I'm so glad you shared your ideas with me, it's making my transtition to full time kubuntu so much easier.

My question is about HDCP, under linux generally, but of course I personally use Kubuntu 18.04.1.

I have some movies on vudu.com. I paid for the HDX version which is vudu speak for 1080p. However vudu enforces HDCP for movies above SD resolution, and so when I try to play them in HDX I get a message saying HDCP isn't supported.

I'm assuming what this boils down to is that there is a mainstream way, typically using windows and there is a linux way, so to speak. That is to say the better way to do things generally is using entirely different technologies for HD playback and so I'm probably not going to find an easy solution to getting HDCP going as it's not ideal.

I did read some on both hdcp in linux and trying to get vudu going on linux but I'm betting you can explain it so much better than what snips and pieces I have found on google.

I can't personally help you much other that to say that HDCP support in the linux Kernel is available in kernel series above 4.17 (Kubuntu 18.04.1 uses 4.15.x) You can install 4.17 or 4.18 kernel and it might work, but I have no experience with that. a newer kernel might break other things on your system so do so with care.
If you choose to install 4.18 then this article may be of help. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/...tu-linux-mint/

Installing 4.17 or 4.18 without corresponding dkms and cuda supporting packages for that kernel version will probably kill an nvidia installation, giving a black screen.

Well, for now, I'm switching to windows as a desktop, and continuing to use kubuntu for dhcp, dns, lamp etc.

Linux has come a huge distance in terms of it's usability for a desktop/workstation, but I just don't think it's there yet. I'll be back when there are more games that work out of the box and hdcp support is baked in.

            --EDIT--

            Some things to mention:

For me it's not just the games working that's important. I love modding games, too. So in addition to the games themselves, I need working mod tools of both the aftermarket (eg nexusmods, ModOrganizer etc) type and also the roll-your-own variety (eg nwn2packer, kotortool, 2da editor, etc).

            --EDIT 2--

I was planning on using PCI passthrough for the games and tools that I couldn't get working under kubuntu, however it seems PCI passthrough is still being developed and isn't really ready for prime time. Also it's a big pain in terms of arranging monitors and hardware so that one can control the underlying kubuntu system when using VMs with the main monitor and other stuff like sound, etc passed through.

I think the ideal situation would be to see virtual 3d gpu support developed to the point where one can run windows or what have you without needing passthrough OR just to be able to run the things I need under kubuntu even if that means wine/proton/playonlinux.
