[Soapbox] What I Would Change in 25.04

These are a few things I would change in the 25.04 Kubuntu before release:

- Disable adaptive sync by default (installer blacks out on Try/Install screen with this active, let users enable if needed).
- Have a very basic Kate setup, enough to recognise it's a text editor for new users and not a programming IDE out of the gate with everything enabled.
- Copying anything to flash-drive, especially huge files results in a long wait with no indication it's finished, maybe a lower dirtybytes value would help.

Have I missed anything ? What do you guys thing ?

That is a KDE thing, Kubuntu has no control over that. This is along running topic of discussion (MANY years -- KDE 3 days) because of users yanking the stick too early and other somewhat normal causes for data loss on USB sticks. I doubt that things will change much, but I myself on current Plasma releases have not had any issues. Either it takes "forever" to copy and sync, or you have to 'eject' and then wait when you want to remove the stick. I admit I only use faster USB3 stick of known quality/speeds.

In any case, the dirty_bytes configuration is set by Ubuntu, so Kubuntu doesn't change that.

kwrite? That is pretty basic, too basic, though
kate's default seems pretty sparse to me. Though I admit toggling off the text menu bar (ctrl-m) most of the time.
As Kubuntu normally keeps to stock KDE settings, this layout is unlikely to change.
What parts make you think that Kate is a bit too much ootb for these new users?
When kwrite was the default, there arguably were more calls to replace it with Kate.
Imo, kate is a decent medium between Notepad or kate and Notepad++. Most of the fluff is turned off but readily discoverable. Turning off or hiding all the UI elements instead of keeping them out of the way but still there is. \

I discovered that the screen saver is defective in Kubuntu 25.04: it does not start in any way and the screen lock (with password) does not work either.

I think theres a lot of things that are not necessarily 25.04 specific, although one is

wayturkey by default! NO THANK YOU! At this point X11 should STILL BE THE DEFAULT and those who wish to experiment can do so... I will save those readying the pitch forks, tar et al. I don't care Margaret. X11 is where I am staying. Full Hard Stop. I am not interested in this debate, discussion. So this is a HARD RED LINE for me. So you can just move on, I am not interested. I've had systemd, puslewire, and other crud shoved down my throat. I ain't interested (I told you Pandoras box! )

Why? I will give one example... NETWORK. I use NETWORKED X11 extensively from X11 over SSH, to XDMCP ... and NOPE don't even go there with VNC, etc.. NOPE. I ain't changing whats worked for longer than the developers of this stuff have been alive. Ain't happening. Any replacement of X11 should be a 1:1 replacement aka X12.. Fix the problem(s)! No the "cure" is to kill the patient with this bunch. Nope.

Other things,
REMOVE snap and any and all snap based programs cough firefox cough.. This is one of the first things I do now. You are welcome to push your yet another stupid package system all you want in some other way! Shoving it down my throat ain't it! Can some one at Canoncial move the red light away from this like unity etc. so they move on to something more imporant! Don't like DEB's issues.. FIX THEM! MAKE DEB even better! I don't disagree with DEB having some areas needing addressing, again, killing the patient is not the cure.

Power Management on desktops, should not default to SUSPEND at any time. You can go read the other thread, nope. And you got it I don't hug trees. I have a chain saw for those!

Enabling of any automatic updates of any form! Nope, this another point.. Scream all you want about "security." Yeah... no. Are you going to come clean up the mess from your crap update that trashed my systems, or pay me to do it? Yeah didn't think so. Nope. I and I ALONE DECIDE WHEN AND WHAT UPDATES are done! Period.

Software selection.

I can go back to the early 2000's and this debate. No choice is going to please everyone, but lacking BASIC TOOLS, ie : nslookup on a install! Is well Just silly. (Thats my polite word. ) There are some other similar basic tools... and I am firm believer in more is better. And this goes back to the days of DL'ng a 1GB+ DVD ISO on 128K ISDN. So that "argument" is a fail with me... (Again ,remember Pandora! )

I think there are some great points in there. I don't agree with all of them... but I think there some good ones, and I think one of the most important is not listed in the 7 bullet points, and should be #1. I will let the reader guess on the one it is. Actually there are 2 points I think should be #1 and then 2.. again, the reader can guess #2.

As for kate.. that you listed... I want it full install.. I use to for an IDE, scribles etc.. It should be ready to go..There are changes in the default view of it I don't like, which seem to be correctable, so I will let it slide, but I still think the changes there wrong. Kwrite? Is that thing still around? Who knew!

One of the great things about Linux and KDE is that you can FIX MOST OF this! Trying fixing some of this one some other alleged OS... rhotsa rhuck Rhaggy!
