hey guy's I'm not really up to date with the forum rules here. I hope I'm not over stepping the rules but are we permitted to discuss hashcat here?

In the case of hashcat, I'm leaning towards 'No' due to the nature of what hashcat is/does, and how it could be abused. Yes, in responsible hands it's a tool that could help a user recover passwords they've forgotten. But in irresponsible hands, ...

I'm just one voice out of four. The other Admins need to weight in on this also.

Yeah i had a sneaking suspicion that might be the case. I tried the hashcat forums but for some reason I've been black listed for SPAMMING!!! That's ok but i have just one problem..... I've never used it before Thanks for the reply Snowhog. Oh well!

Hehe. Well, given that we don't have that many 'rules', and fewer still are written down, it's rather easy.

Unlike many other forums, we are (in "there eyes") extremely tolerant of the content that gets posted, but we do have limits.

I'm on the fence. I have no problem with legitimate use of a tool like that but it's really out-of-scope for Kubuntu because a simple recovery mode boot gives you unfettered access to root. Therefore, who would need it? Users trying to breach a windows install? Cracking passwords of copyrighted software? Break into someone's Bitcoin wallet? In these cases, likely or maybe obviously not a legal thing to do.

I think acknowledging it exists is OK, but we should avoid detailed usage examples or anything technical related to it. Use Reddit for that.
