    KDE’s New Distro

KDE’s New Distro: Btrfs-Based, Immutable Linux OS, with Flatpak and Snap

Ready to be surprised? KDE Linux, a new Arch-based immutable OS featuring Btrfs, Flatpak, and Snap, made by KDE's devs, is now in development.
Flatpak & Snap? Definitely NOT for me!

This is what Project Banana has been renamed to.

Being arch is sort of immaterial, at least at this stage.

And being" immutable" sort of requires something like flatpak or snap, though these sorts of systems do have " overlay" capabilities for adding this to /usr and things like that .

As a dev platform it makes sense as KDE provides software using both snap and flatpak.

And don't forget the KDE version of Ubuntu Core that has been in the works for a bit, albeit at a slow pace.

I'm not in to immutable distros either, they're not for me.

If I was going to tinker with a KDE distro based on Arch I'd go for CachyOS.

I installed it on my old ThinkPad before I went to Thailand but haven't had time to boot it up,
update it and play with it since I've been back! Maybe if it rains on one of my days off?

Have you actually used one, though? 'Immutable" is a little bit of on overstatement, really.

I spent 6 months or more on Kinoite, and had no issues outside of the physical size of system updates at the time (partly from my mucking with things inside the 'immutable' part), and not much of a learning curve, even considering I needed to do some slightly custom stuff to support my Chromebook hardware.

No, they are not for everyone, not yet, but the sheer number of people hammering on these things in their various forms will imo lead to where Linux distros will go in the near future. Even if some of us old timers and fuddy duddies don't like it. This cane-waving old fart doesn't have any real issues with it.

I WILL move to such a system on my laptops in the not too distant future. On my PC, that probably will remain a tinker-box, though that can be done on these "immutable' systems.
