Wow! Could they make it more irritating, perhaps using audio and the voice of a grade school teacher?
My first thought as well. To be chastised by an ethereal being?

Perhaps they are trying to prepare us for AI control of our lives? Big Brother is still too scary, so they start with a spell check bot?
What's next? Will the bot require that you smack your own hand with a ruler?
Or write the correct spelling fifty times on the virtual blackboard?
Worse: Alexa will announce to everyone in your home that "Johnny" is sitting in the virtual corner until he learns to spell Antidisestablishmentarianism ?
Virtual shunning of the bad speller? Oh, Brave New World!

Nope, but I did watch too much television as a kid...
It couldn't be due to too much TV as a kid.
After all, the Lone Ranger never killed anyone. He always shot the gun out of the bad guy's hand. He always tipped his hat to a lady. Never told a lie. Upheld law and order, even though he wore a mask. Bigot? His best friend and companion was an Indian.
The same for Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rodgers, Ronald Reagan (Death Valley Days), Lash La Rue, and the Cisco Kid. This was before Bonanza and The Virginian. Even John Wayne fit the mold. Actually, most of those actors were movie stars in the 1930's through the 1950s, which indicated the culture that was being expressed then. Today, not so much.

My dad went to Catholic schools during the 40s and early 50s. He was born left-handed. The sweet nuns beat it out of him. (He became ambidextrous. Writes with one hand, swings a hammer with the other)
If you think Education is expensive, try ignorance.
The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has limits.

My mother-in-law must have been a secret Nun because she beat it out of my wife as well, and my wife writes with her right hand and does everything else with her left.

My grandmother got that "therapy" as a child too. Probably why my immediate family did not go to ecumenical schools... 'course we kids are now the product of "public" schools... Not sure it was better...
[edit] Bless the day that computer spell check was implemented...

I logged in to BofA yesterday only to be met by its new assistant, Erica. Yes, Erica can do all sorts of nifty things--if you just give her a chance, for example, by talking to her. I wouldn't know what wonders await me in this beautiful new land of Erica, as I immediately got her out of my way. Ugh! Some things are best just left alone!

I'll bet Erica knows where you live... Sleep lightly, be ready...

And, if Erica is any friend of Alexa she's already sent emails to many people in your address book that contains casual conversations overheard while you were talking to Erica, just like Alexa did.

Hmmmm... Do you think it's a conspiracy? Suspicious minds want to know! Wait! Don't answer that out loud...
Voice Command: "Erica, compute the value of PI to 14 million decimal places, start now. Run parallel computation with Alexa and compare checksums. Post posting verified result to Wikipedia and wait for confirmation."
Ok! It may be safe to talk for a minute. I don't think Erica is connected to Deep Mind or Summit, yet...

That would only take either one of them a mere second or two. The current record for the number of digits in Pi is 22 trillion:
