I don't hold out much hope for a legislated solution to this loss of privacy. Similarly, a large scale community rejection of social media is also unlikely...

"You Can't Fix Stupid" is, IMO, very accurate in reference to those who use social media. Even commercial businesses have "drunk the Kookaid" and participate in this.

Please, to all those who, like I, design websites, Fight this trend. Advise your clients of the risk to their customers (readers).
I reject job offers which require support of social media links in a website. Sure, it costs me income, but I sleep better at night.

To all who browse the 'net, vote with your mouse/stylus/finger and close windows which show social media links. You can, of course, send a message to the website owners... If you choose this option, be polite, but firm in explaining why you refuse to patronize their website.

So I run plug-ins available for Firefox that disallow Facebook and similar to follow me.

I've used NoScript for this; it seems to have dealt to facebook tracking. I try to avoid sites that load scripts from dozens of urls, but it's hit or miss. I'll look into privacy essentials, maybe they have a blacklist that's kept up to date.

Since this thread started, facebook have admitted that most, if not all, of their customer's data have been downloaded by entities they don't know. We suspected this, but they'd only admitted to the 80 million or so accounts Cambridge Analytica accessed. I'd have thought that outside the US they have broken the law wholesale, and face huge fines or closure, but I haven't seen reports of this.

I also run NoScript and it does seem to avoid many of the popups with social media links. Sometimes I need to tweak the settings for individual websites in order to view their actual content, but those are temporary weakening of the NoScript prohibitions and I remove them when I'm done with a page.

I am sometimes taken aghast (millennials can look it up) by the sheer number of third party scripts which some websites invoke... Follow the money to see their real motivation...

It is humorous when a website tells me that I must allow this or that "feature" in order to view their content. My comment is that it really THEY (the website owners) who "must" remove some of their invasive coding if they want me to read their content... They seldom hear me...

I believe the original concept of Facebook was nice and worth paying for.
But only when there is a guarantee the data is not harvested, something near impossible in the present US judicial and political system.

What they are presently talking about is a Facebook subscription that gives greater protection against 3rd parties monetising your data but Facebook itself still reserves the right to use and abuse your postings.

But Facebook doesn't let anyone connect to other networks. So it's basic setup is bad. The decentralised networks, like Friendica, Hubzilla, Diaspora, Mastodon and SocialHome all connect to each others networks. You can stay in contact with your friends on the other networks even if you decide to change. They don't blackmail you to cut you off from your friends like Facebook does.

People want to stay in touch with friends and family. Having news, companies, ads, data mining and click bait on your personal network is going to deminish your experience in your private world.

Unfortunately I think it will take a very large group of people moving to a more open or decentralized platform, and not just us tech nerds. Even then, someone on each and every node on such a network still has access to data.

Having said that, such a thing has already been done before, and it worked fairly well for the era : usenet. Then again, how much of that, like IRC, is tech nerds nerding?

Don't worry how they make money. Don't let that cloud your view. Even Facebook didn't know at the beginning. This is not about Doing the same as Facebook but under a different name.

The smart people will always be the first to move. The sheep are always followers. You can't sit and wait for them to do something. Yes it will take a lot of people. But they don't have to all join one network.

Usenet and IRC have poor usability.

When I "lost" my password to a little used FB account that I keep for interacting with various "news sites"... FB requested such...

I told them that it was curious that dozens of "friends"...actually former students etc had pictures of superheroes, skunks, flowers and what not...

and that I had a really cheap deal on a bridge in Brooklyn if they wanted to buy it before I was going to put up my drivers liscence...

They "have a policy" but it is enforced by algorithms until the nail that was not hammered down appears and then a HUMAN is all over you...

and CURIOUSLY... I was on a "news site" that wanted me to "login with my FB"...and...low and behold...

I was back in FB...because the great ZUCH was making money from the news site which was trying to target my FB...

this is just all crappola and smoke screen...

Has it ever dawned on ANYone just WHY it is...the in MANY cases... the "police" are able to SO QUICKLY apprehend a "terrorist" ... after a mass thing?

It is because during the Obama years FB and a lot of the other social media companies responded to a "ruling" that if they DID NOT provide such that they were open to civil penalty
