I don't hold out much hope for a legislated solution to this loss of privacy. Similarly, a large scale community rejection of social media is also unlikely...
"You Can't Fix Stupid" is, IMO, very accurate in reference to those who use social media. Even commercial businesses have "drunk the Kookaid" and participate in this.

Please, to all those who, like I, design websites, Fight this trend. Advise your clients of the risk to their customers (readers).
I reject job offers which require support of social media links in a website. Sure, it costs me income, but I sleep better at night.
To all who browse the 'net, vote with your mouse/stylus/finger and close windows which show social media links. You can, of course, send a message to the website owners... If you choose this option, be polite, but firm in explaining why you refuse to patronize their website.
