For a serious discussion on the topic...

To me, the "best answer" selected by the person asking may not be the best answer for everyone. Debate over topics and differing viewpoints/solutions is the essence of a forum, not the ranking of snippets of information. Sometimes or even often the ranking may be valid, but maybe not - kinda like Yelp rating of restaurants. Without a ranking of the rank-er, the validity of any comment is suspect.

In a way, we have a user "score" of sorts - the number of posts and threads credited to each user is listed. This can be a guide to the amount of contribution and activity of a user, but not indicative of their ability or knowledge.

Finally, a user may have loads of knowledge on one topic but know nothing about another. This fact totally invalidates any ranking system on a forum like this one where the topics vary widely.

We chose, a long time ago; even before we switched to vBulletin; not to use a Thank You system. For a while, in our early days, we did use such a system, but they tend to get out of hand and loose validity, so we stopped.

And, isn't Linux all about choice, not popularity. Your distro or app of choice, or the help offered by someone, may not be the most popular but if it works for you .... The best way to reward someone for giving you good advice is, as you learn more and more, contribute to the solutions of the problems of others. That's the purpose of this forum!

I like the idea of a 1-click way of saying "thumbs up! thank you! great reply!" etc. I'm so used to that on other forums I use that I actually miss it here.

It might make sense if it could only be contained to relevant problem threads. It doesn't make sense outside of that constraint. If it could be limited to those types of sub-forums, I would be OK with it.

Its pretty simple you just when your thread is solved you can say something like Thank you <poster>, replay #4 solved my issue.
