I started downloading an iso, took a couple swigs of Diet Dr Pepper, turned back to the laptop, and had finished downloading. I thought something was wrong lol.

I am also glad I noticed that the 7th gen i7 and i5 cpus are dual core. Was adamant about having an i7, thinking they were all quad core. Seeing that they weren't, I decided to look at i5 models and noticed the Ideapad 520s had the new processors, and it was on sale PLUS a company discount. (Saved 200 dollars)

My first new complete system since 1998 and first new hardware in about 10 years.
I chose it because it is similar in size and build to my aluminum body Acer Chromebook 14, which I totally love.

i5 and i7 were both marketed as dual- and quad-core machines. Dell has put dual-core i7 in Latitudes for years. Intel doesn't make an 8th generation i5 *or* i7 with only two cores; you can choose four or six, though

              Lenovo Ideapad 520S
I added an ADATA XPG SX6000 NVMe ssd stick as 5400 rom spinning drives are sooo 2015, and agonizingly slow.

Does Kubuntu work with the finger print reader?

I would love to hear about that one ,,,,,I never could get more than 1 of the 4-5 required setup scans to take with fprintgui on my bonox8.

No idea, yet. I have not even looked. Just installed the OS today, between work and other things. As a rule, I never check hardware compatibility. Everything works out of the box, otherwise. It is unlikely that it is supported at the moment, but I don't really care so much about it.

Sooner or later it will be supported, especially if the make & model turns out to be popular. It only takes one dev buying it.
From the specs and the price you paid you got a great deal!

Because I found it too much trouble and there were problems with KDM I did not install it on newer releases, should work on Plasma

This is a Upek Biometric touchchip and Launchpad has a driver and instructions for it:
                          https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint/+...ingerprint-gui

But I believe Lenovo has gone to a different type/ manufacturer.
Oh yeah. It is a synaptics unit of some sort, with many reports of no support, and not much (if any) development action on these devices in general. No biggie. I don't use it anyway.

ya ,,,just tried it again ,,,it wont even take 1 print reading now or resize the fingerprint-gui window to see it all ,,,,,/var/log/auth.log looks like it's loding it ok ,,,,but no joy.

Don't feel alone, VINNY, my iPHone 6+ fingerprint scanner works only 50% of the time. Gets aggravating, especially since I paid $$$ for it.
