    Dead NVMe SSD

I was just watching a Youtube video when suddenly my PC froze completely.

No problem I thought, just Ctrl Alt F3 to the Terminal, login and reboot!

Nope! Lots of errors for my Crucial 1Tb NVMe system drive.

Hard shutdown and reboot but the SSD is not recognised by the system!

I'm going to have to boot with a Live USB stick to check!

Nope, not even a Live USB Partition Manager sees the NVMe drive.

It looks like I'm going to have to operate on the machine!

I'm glad I made a backup of my data!

    This is the way!

I am sorry to get to hear of your failing NVMe drive, of course.

A year old and it died? It should have lasted 3 to 5 years or longer.
How often did you have fstrim set to run?
I use the free Linux version HDSentinel v 0.19 (2021) to keep track of the status of my SSD status.
You can pay $22 for version 6.10 if you feel the need.

Trim was set to run daily if I remember.

Another cause could be the heat and the plastic pin (not screw) that holds it in place has popped out and it's not making contact properly!

          But that's just wishful thinking!

No, it was firmly in place so I removed it an put it in a Logitech USB NVMe caddie and plugged it into the PC I'm using. Mint sees the caddie but tells me it's empty!

Not to add to the confusion, but I have two different USB nvme cases now, because some controller chips on these don't play nice with all nvme sticks. Which I found out after some research after mine would not work with a known good, working NVME OS drive.

I've got one that has old firmware. Works using Ubuntu 20.02 but not 22.04. It reports this on boot: "Invalid MNAN value 0"

Still waiting for Adata to update the firmware installer

Mine is no longer seen at all by the machine BIOS or in a case.

I've got a WD Blue SN570 1Tb stick arriving today. I think I'll pass on Crucial sticks for a while.

I suggest you monitor the replacement occasionally with smartctl or nvme smart-log.

I may also get a heatsink for it. The weather here goes from darn cold to sweltering hot!

It's just before 10:00am and it's 32C outside! Cooler than yesterday but not good for tech equipment!
