Ditto about DDG. On QWant, click the "Web" button on the left margin to get the best & most results for a search.

I use Firefox browser with adblock, privacy badger and https everywhere plugins. I didn't know about the mozilla thing, if and when they pollute the browser with crap I'll move. I have Brave as my phone browser, it works well on there. As a desktop browser, it's half arsed and unfinished so maybe something for the future. I like Qupzilla/Falkon but it'd need to at have some third party cookie blocking ability like privacy badger built into it for me to use it regularly. I use DDG as search engine but I'll give Qwant a go.

I've never used my surname in anything on the internet that doesn't involve the passing of money, so I'm not sure how that factors in with the data collection nonsense. I dislike personal social networking, I much prefer this old forum style where the discussion is about a topic not a vehicle for narcissism or just posting drivel. That said, Facebook does have a good events section for finding out things to do, so it's not going yet for me.

The guy in the video mentioned "Minds" that site is horrible. It has this dreadful "promoted posts" system where people you have no interest can spam the top of your feed. The posts there are also insanely large so this spam will require some scrolling to get past. I did find a way to block it with adblock but that doesn't excuse the issue in the first place.

Bings, I can guarantee that if you shop on the Internet and pay using a credit or debit card then regardless of what name you use on blogs and forums, your IP address has linked your identity to your credit or debit card into, besides being linked to your ISP. IF you use Tor, your IP address is hidden, but shopping with Tor and paying online breaks that privacy.

And, as it has just been shown in other posts here, IF the gov wants to know who you are all they have to do is collect examples of your suspected writing in various forums and compare that with billions of emails from Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other email services until they find a sylometric match..

wrt Firefox, I also use the NoScript extension. As a person who does website design, I continue to be amazed at the number of website owners who allow multiple third-party scripts to run on their sites.

While I understand the desire to increase the monetary flow from a given website, I totally disagree with the use of unvetted advertising scrips and links to code outside of the individual website. It's like driving with horse blinders on, you never see what is going to "blindside" either you or your customer...

By using third-party scripts, the website owner trusts that the people who wrote and maintained those scripts will keep a close eye on how it is used AND prevent their code from being corrupted by "less ethical" members of the internet...

Since I'm ranting, let me point out that Google(r) is one of the bigger problems in terms of those third-party scripts. Website owners blindly trust that the tools which they "borrow" from the Google(r) library are safe.

For example, look at the reCaptcha authentication tool. We all see it being used and the image sets used in the design are (IMO) poor and needs some serious adjustment. Plus there is the trust issue again, since the website owner does not check the authentication against an internal standard. It is a pet peeve that the reCaptcha image set named "STREET NAMES" is next to impossible to pass successfully. I don't think the people who designed that image set are speaking the same language as me. Very probably a cultural difference. [/rant off]

The google font thing winds me up, how difficult is it to host your own damn fonts.

I've downloaded Qupzilla, and it looks OK so far. Can't figure out how to add my Firefox bookmarks, however. I've noticed it uses the DuckDuckGo search engine--is there an alternative?

On further testing of Vivaldi, I find that it is based on Chrome(r), and very much (too much) linked to Google(r) and their product line. There are no native Vivaldi extensions (at this time) and the only options are from the Chrome(r) web store. So... Goodbye Vivaldi, I hardly knew ye.

Vivaldi is not based on Chrome but on Chromium and most of the Chromium devs are Google employees, the infrastructure Chromium uses is provided by Google, etc, etc, etc.

First, I have the menubar visible across the top of the screen <Right click at screen top->Check mark Menu Bar option>

From Firefox, export your bookmarks to an html file "bookmarks.html" <Bookmarks->Show All Bookmarks->Import and Backup->Export Bookmarks to HTML> The default file for export is "bookmarks.html", use it and choose a place to download.

You may be able to extract bookmarks directly from the firefox diretory, but my installation of Firefox was not visible (not same path) to Qupzilla's tool. Yours might work?

From Qupzilla/Falkon <Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks->Import Export->Import Bookmarks->HTML File> Select the html file from Firefox and it will download your bookmarks. It may not place them in a logical place, but you'll find them in the bookmark file tree.

RE search engines. The search box has a small down arrow which gives access to the current engines. Use the option Manage Search Engines. You can Add, Remove, and Edit.

There's always an alternative. Preferences>Other>Manage Search Engines.

Quant.com is an excellent search engine that doesn't track you or connect your searches to your IP address. It is in France
