Here in New Zealand our Marmite is made locally, and is subtly different from the UK Marmite. There is a cultural divide here between the eaters of Vegemite and Marmite; the Marmite factory is in Christchurch and was badly damaged by the 2011 earthquake there, and the Marmite tribe could not bring themselves to eat Vegemite. When, many months later, the factory restarted, a month's production was sold out across the country in hours.
The point behind the yeast spreads is that they're very nutritious, being good sources of many B-group vitamins. One doesn't need or want much, just a scrape will do. I think the strong taste is acquired because one's system learns how good it is for it. "Beer is life" indeed; maybe nutrients from the yeast are part of that.
