Apple will let you pay them to fix their design defect

For the last two years my iPhone 6+ has been, in effect, my primary computer. I have photographs of every document generated since my wife's heart and hip surgery. I watch her heart with an FDA approved miniature EKG device from Kardia that attaches to the back of the phone. I do banking and bill paying, check the weather, play games, check maps and use it as a GPS, communicate with the local library about book due dates and availabilities, watch lots of YT videos, schedule appointments, make reminders, track aircraft in realtime and much more. What I do with my Linux laptop is watch movies on the 17" screen, write documents, use the Sage math engine and play Minecraft. Sometimes I do on line banking, pay bills, etc.

This may come to a roaring stop because of what I read today about an iPhone6+ display problem involving a gray bar at the top of the display, and about Apple's "Error 53", a result of Apple bricking a repaired phone, forcing the user to buy another one. Microsoft wasn't any worse.

    http://mendonipadrehab.com/

What does this mean for you?
I talked with Apple today about the details of their touch "repair" program, this is what I learned.
1.) Apple does not guarantee that they will actually repair your board, but may instead swap it for one from their refurbished replacement stock. This means you may lose your data.

2.) Apple does not deny that Replacement Stock phones may contain boards harvested from phones with prior history of drop or bend, and therefore likely to develop the same problem down the road.

3.) Apple can not confirm that there have been any changes made to the original design, such as a future proof metal shield, that will reduce the risk of this problem happening again.

4.) If you have any secondary issues with your device such as screen or frame damage you will not be eligible for the repair/swap program, and will have to pay $349 for regular out of warranty swap with refurbished stock.

5.) There is only a 90 day warranty on the repair/swap.

6.) The program for Apple to repair their own defective product is not free. You will pay $149 to have their design flaw either fixed or swapped for another board with the same underlying fault.

We continue to stand by our bona fide REPAIR solution for touch problems. We offer a superior 6 month warranty, futureproof shield installation, actual repair of YOUR board with no swaps, and extended no fix no fee guarantee that covers 10 possible secondary complications of touch ic microsurgery in addition to touch function.

Well dump it. Easy. And avoid Apple in future. There are plenty of other makers out there.

Being able to hop between brands where everything stays usable, keeps them from getting complacent like Apple. Whos high prices and small market share surely makes it an easy decision.

Well, I know that it's an Iphone... but...

When I went on my first dive to Nassau I already had an Android S3 and decided that I should "have a backup" ...Because I had PLANNED to skype my last two lectures from the dive boat back to my class ( it was end of the semester and the section on "environments" in Biology ) and the Dean told me to GO, GO, GO... and hang the last couple of lectures but I wanted a substitute and they set up a SKYPE for my classes.

Anyway upshot was that the Bahamas has their own little, and VERY NICE, phone system and the people have "previous generation" phones for chump change and about $5.00 per month service, ...but it ONLY works for the confines of the island.

If you take YOUR phone you have to use it in the confines of a building with very limited range wi fi which is fine...

But to the point... I purchased another S3...

And like you, I do almost ALL of my "computing" on that OLD phone, EXCEPT banking, I don't do ANY banking online

You can buy an S3 now for probably $90.00 USD...get two of them, or maybe 3!!

I have two battery rechargers by "Anker" and three extra batteries and just switch them out.

Total cost for you would be less than the "out of warranty swap".

I also have "wave watch" apps, water temp apps, I skype on it, of course, talk to it instead of typing on a computer to make documents, drop them to the computer using KDE connect and then modify and format.

I have WPS office on it and talk to the various apps, and have made, in an emergency, a "simple presentation" and e-mailed it to myself to use later.

This has nothing to do with what you do but...since I use socratic method instead of lecturing, I gather equipment for inclass activities and regular laboratories, and put it on a cart and haul it to the classroom.

I have previously jotted down what activitries I think I can do in the classroom and we have at it.

As the class progresses I put stuff on the whiteboard, notes, definitions, equations, etc. and photograph them as I go along and then erase. Later I print off the photographs and have a complete record of what was done.

i then put those into a notebook, with dates, in order, and over the last few years really do not "make any lesson plans".

if I'm ever sick, which until my upcoming surgery, I am not, but if I ever am, I will just have the substitute scan the pictures and work from them.

Point being that, as far as I can determine, about the ONLY reason to have the latest and greatest phone and the "large one" is to watch videos, play games and listen to music.

I have not run across anything in my rather extensive use of software that needs a "new" phone.

so...again...maybe dump the Iphone and buy three or four S3s. lol

minimal plan cost and less than a warranty payment! lol

Yes. The spare phone doesn't even have to be the same brand. And it will still be cheaper than the 'difference' between the 8gb and the 16gb iPhones. Oh. And stick a $8, 32gb micro SD card in if you need more space.

Woody, you used the socratic method too!
Show me a teacher who lectures and I'll show you class room of bored kids sprinkled with a few who think memorizing notes is the way to learn something.

When I taught science every class was a lab. Every student kept a graph lab notebook. Every page was signed and dated. The first class in physics began with the questions "What is weight?" and "What is mass?". Subsequent classes began with "What is length?" and "What is time?". Each student had a box with all sorts of small things in it from which one could devise a spring scale, a beam balance, a measuring stick, etc. Most kids had HS science and "knew" the answers but never really built their knowledge from the ground up. This led to why the Temperature scale was arbitrary for a while (marking the difference between the hottest summer day and the coldest winter day in France into 100 equal parts - beginning with 0 and ending with 100 ).
It's as much fun for the teacher as it is for the student. It really got interesting when they started calibrating their masses and then began comparing the masses of various objects I supplied and then, because they were both measuring the same object, coming to a consensus as to the unit and its name.

Fun, fun, fun. I LOVED to teach, but I couldn't afford to do it.

              GG... PLEASE...

wander over to a junior college and apply to teach a physics class...

              Maybe

All of the concrete car blocks that Obama has tried to crush the "junior colleges" will be taken away by Trump.

For the ELITE LIBERAL..."only a liberal arts elite academe college" is...worth anything...

              but...

              The students KNOW...

IF...>IF...>>IF Trump squashes the Obama small college rules...

hie thyself to a local college...

              and...

              enjoy teaching again...
