    Kubuntu/Linux is great

    Just goofing around here.

I'm using a newer PC I built in 2015. I stored my older PC box under my desk, built 2009, an Intel DG33 board with an E8400 CPU. The older 2009 still has a hard drive in it with Kubuntu 8.04.3 installed.

Well, for fun, I decided to fire up the older 2009 system, connected to the 2009 NEC Accusync 750F 15" CRT monitor. The PC malfunctioned: It came on for 2-3 seconds, went off, came back on for 2-3 s., went off, etc., like that. Powered down, checked a few connections, tried again and it came up OK and booted Kubuntu 8.04.3 with no problem.

Wanting to wipe that hard drive, I re-booted the PC to a Live 14.04.3 USB stick, and in the live session I opened Konsole and ran dd to wipe the 320 GB HDD, which it did nicely in 4703 seconds.

Next, also in the live session, I tried to partition that old HDD using the KDE Partition manager, didn't have much luck, installed gparted in the live session, tried to use gparted from the command line to format the HDD, didn't have much luck (all sorts of error messages), and so I shut the PC down.

I then tried to re-boot the old 2009 PC using an older version (early 2015) live gparted USB. But, once again, the PC malfunctioned as described above, shutting itself off and turning back on repeatedly.

So I did the usual, right?, reset ALL connections (including memory and USBs). But still no-go. So, it's probably the power supply or motherboard. I had an old Antec power supply in the garage, a 2005 model, I traded it into the 2009 PC, and that fixed the hardware problem, the 2009 PC booted like it should.

So now I could re-boot the PC using that old GParted Live USB stick, reformatted the HDD (it takes an MBR, not UEFI/GPT as the 2009 system is not UEFI firmware), and then re-booted the PC using a Live Kubuntu 14.04.3 USB stick. Then, finally, I installed Kubuntu 14.04.3 from the live USB stick -- and it went smoothly and fast (a matter of 10-15 minutes, I didn't time it).

Re-booted the PC to the newly installed 14.04.3, booted right up, installed Muon Package Manager from Muon Discover, and installed all the updates offered, including kernel and GRUB, some 370 GB, no problems--and quick, the updates were done while I typed this post in a Word document.. Re-booted to test it: no problems.

The point is (besides having fun bringing an old system back from the dead), Linux/Kubuntu is really great the way it makes such work not only easy, and doable, but a real pleasure. A nice way to take a break from US politics ... !

I just retired my Acer 7739 and it sets on a shelf in the closet, in a vacuum sealed plastic bag.
I may do what you did in the future but right now it has a working copy of IQAN dev tools running under WINE, which I don't want to install on this Acer V3-771G.
Linux is FUN, that's for sure!
