    Zesty Testing

Looks like it's time to start testing the latest development of Kubuntu 17.04. It is now available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/

I have yet to download it as I am close to reaching the limit of my quota for this month. Come November, I will be on a new plan and I will certainly install it and start to see how well it performs. While I bemoan the fact that Neon will not be available until the next LTS, I want to see if the final distribution in the alphabet, Zesty, is a worthy replacement of Xenial with Neon.

Indeed! We have just started building zesty packages in our KCI.

Just curious, as we are having our "Kubuntu Vision" meeting very shortly, but what would end users like to see in Zesty?

I'm looking for feedback on how we could be better. But please bear in mind that we are Kubuntu, not Neon. It is impossible to provide the latest and greatest KDE software in Kubuntu releases due to us being a Ubuntu flavor/flavour and having to comply with freezes and testing procedures.

Well I downloaded zesty-desktop-amd64.iso on the 31st October as I found I had not reached the limit on my ISP monthly quota. I have failed in my attempts to install Zesty.

My first attempt was to use KDE Startup Disk Creator. (Note that the USB files using that process cannot be deleted and the USB partition could not delete.) The error message that I got using this USB was: An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from CD failed. So I decided to make a bootable DVD which also gave the same error message.

I then decided to use dd to clear the USB of all it files and then created a FAT32 partition on it. I then used UNetbootin to create a bootable USB. This also gave the same error.

I noticed that when it returned to the Zesty desktop there were updates that could be installed. So I decided to install these updates. When I retried the installation of Zesty, it then proceed to the point of failing to install Grub.

I will be interested to know if there is anyway round this problem as I currently plan to wait a week before having another go at downloading a new zesty iso.

If you have download limits you should think about using zsync, as it will only download what has changed on the iso instead of the full image. For more instructions, see - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZsyncCdImage

I do not have any limits on the size of the files that I download. With my ISP, there is a defined number of GiB, eg 100GiB that can be downloaded in a month. If that limit is passed, the connection is slowed, but there is still no limit on the size of files. Last month I had 3 GiB available, so I could download the iso without any problems. It basically took me 9 minutes to complete the download.

Also, for the "Kubuntu Vision" meeting that is coming up, I hope you are able to get some useful suggestions for the way ahead.

Its not the size of the files, its for people who have a quota or slow internet. With zsync the download is a lot smaller, approximately couple hundred megabytes compared to a couple of gigabytes for the full iso to download normally.

zsync is a wonderful piece of software that downloads only the parts of a file that are changed, so as to avoid downloading a full copy every time.
For example I just updated the kubuntu daily ISO copy I have, and zsync determined via checksum that I already had of the 88.2% data for updated ISO already present in my current copy, so only had to download 11.8% so saved over 1.1GB of what would have been wasted bandwidth.

Well done!! What I would like to know is, does the resultant iso work at installing Zesty for you.

Have not tried so far. The Zesty I am running here was upgraded from Yakkety at the start of Zesty by switching repos and carrying on rolling with updates.

This early in the release cycle, there is nothing much show-stoppingly different about Zesty. For kubuntu anyway.

Mine is also an upgrade from Yakkety, so can't comment on a fresh install from the .iso. Is there anyone with a decent internet connection could download the iso and verify what NoWorries is describing?

                      Downloading now:

                      zesty-desktop-amd64.iso 01-Nov-2016 05:49 1.5G Desktop image for 64-bit PC (AMD64) computers (standard download)

Will try to install it in an Oracle VirtualBox VM. I'll report my results.

                      Added:

                      1. Downloaded fine. Verified the .iso using SHA1 (what I have available on my iMac).
                      2. Created a static 50GB sized VM with 4096MB of base memory and 32MB of video memory and selected the zesty-desktop-amd64.iso (Storage > Controller: IDE > IDE Secondary Master).
                      3. Started the VM.

Everything looks normal up through the screen just prior to when the Desktop would load (the background image is present with the K-Gear and the loading progress bar below). However, the progress bar never reaches the end; close, but no the end; then the screen goes to black. No mouse cursor, and I can't invoke any tty. I have no option but to power off the VM. I repeated the process twice with the same results.

In VMware, I get a black breeze cursor, but your experience largely matches mine: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...348/comments/5

Live session loads here in VirtualBox, albeit with a bit more delay than might be usual (2GB RAM and 64 MB graphics set).

The installer bug is present though.

The fix to the installer problem should be in the new daily build .iso tomorrow, according to acheron.
