BTW, Woody, IF Clinton is elected president, and I suspect that she will, the price of ammo will go through the roof. You have 5 weeks to buy a sufficient stockpile. If you have less than a 5,000 rounds you are an amateur. 10,000 rounds will keep you satisfied for a year or two, but to be really ready perhaps more than 50,000 rounds.

    Just joking.
An interesting look at the stopping power of bullets is here. And, a very informative video about comparative injuries from handgun and rifles is here. Basically, rifles are MUCH more lethal than handguns, as you would suspect. Basically, to be lethal, a handgun bullet has to hit the brain or brain stem, heart or major artery or vein because all they do is make a hole and cause bleeding. .22LR bullets can kill at over 300 yards if one of those locations are hit. 9mm, .40 or .45 caliber bullets just make holes with twice the diameter. Many a person has been hit by a 9mm and raised a lot of trouble before they got tired and sat down. A lot of people have been shot by handguns and didn't even realize it until they noticed blood on their clothes. Others have been hit by a 9mm and other calibers and dropped dead on the spot because a critical area was hit. As you know doubt know, neither handguns or rifle bullets hit with enough force to lift a person off their feet, much less blow them backwards, despite what Hollywood movies show.

Rifle bullets, especially high velocity ones, deliver so much energy that the damage goes far beyond the diameter of the bullet hole. Hydrostatic shock waves spread out from the wound channel for several centimeters, and fragmentation makes it worse.

Interesting discussion; have wondered about all this but hesitant to google such issues! Explains why police seem to shoot for the chest (heart). Not a gun-guy here. I simply own two (self defense): 22 & 38 snub nose, have done target shooting, got some training, Army ROTC (M-16, of course), etc. Thinking of buying one more gun. For another, better, handgun, what would you recommend (affordable-wise)?

Qqmike, I use https//:Startpage.com as my default search engine. It is private, secure and will give you "google" results via an anonymous search request. They are a Meta search engine, offering results from most of the major search engine databases...

No matter what the 'experts' say/report, it is still true that the most effective handgun is the one that the user can wield comfortably and hit the target aimed at reliably.

                    As per what GG wrote.

I KNOW.........GB junior is anathema in these hallowed environs....but.....

                    AFTER 9-11......

He set up a stealth program, in which "certain funds" were channeled into certain places... through certain "clubs" and certain "organizations" as some kind of "grant" given out...

To have "competitions" for "girls mostly / women somewhat" to do a "variety of sports activities" such as archery, world class frisbee and, skeet.

                    notice the skeet.....

I ran across this back when I was in "cowboy action shooting" (SASS) which I joined for one reason and one reason only, and that was to practice on a regular basis getting back into the groove of just "handling" a gun.

Now, yes, they do six guns and single action at that, but after a while I then purchased my very first automatic except for the old Ruger 22 auto that I had thirty years ago and traded off, but... i was SURPRISED...

at just how many young ladies were regularly showing up at skeet ranges .........IN GROUPS......... and having a WUNNERFUL time! They were INTO it....and a LOT better than the guys!!! lol

Of course the very DAY that Obama came in that was stopped. Don't want those GIRLS to actually KNOW how to defend themselves.... better to have the police show up fifteen minutes after she is raped/mutilated/dead and the suspect is gone.

Use DuckDuckGo or Ixstart to do your web searching. They don't track and they don't connect your IP address to your search or search results, but they do use Google.

Good and affordable. Tough question. MY answer to that WAS a Beretta Nano 9mm. I paid $350 for it five years ago. I got it specifically to carry concealed, for which it worked very well. Mine worked best on 148 grain ammo. Lighter loads had failures to eject (FTE) about one out of a hundred shots or so. My wife couldn't rack the slide very well and the recoil made her forearm bone ache. 50 years ago I used to reload my own .30 ammo and when I bought the Nano I used a Lee press to reload my 9mm ammo. However, with a margin of 1 grain of HP-38 powder it was easy to pancake a primer or have an under powered round, and I didn't want to invest in a stage press.

So I sold it and bought a Taurus PT-22 pocket mosquito. (8+1). Don't laugh. The bore looks a LOT bigger when it's pointed at you! And, it goes well with my Marlin 795 rifle. Same ammo is used in both, the CCI Standard 1070 ft/sec round, which is sub-sonic so you don't hear the crack of a sonic boom as the round leaves the barrel.

The only problem with your .38 snub nose is the limited number of shots it holds, usually 5 or 6. A lot of people don't put a round under the hammer on double action pistols. Most modern handguns use magazines that are either single stack (6--8 rounds) or double stack (14 -16 rounds), not counting one in the pipe. It is hard to reload a pistol under duress. For a modern handgun it takes only a couple seconds to push a button to eject the empty mag and to shove in another and release the slide, putting the weapon into battery. The worst thing you can do in a self-defense mode is to run out of bullets. That's why most people who conceal carry are also concealing a second magazine. For single stacks that gives them two mags with a total of 12 to 16 shots and for a double stack Glock they have around 30 shots. Some carry 3 or 4 reload mags, giving them a total of 60 shots. I have 50 rounds available.

You want to keep the variety of ammunition you need to a minimum. It makes keeping a stash of ammo easy. You own a 22 and a .38. The .22LR is the most common and affordable ammunition available, anywhere. Next is the 9mm. Then the .38 or the .45. You can buy quick reloading devices for the cylinder of your .38 pistol. Have a couple of those handy near your .38. Since you don't conceal carry, and I wouldn't recommend open carry even if it is legal in your state, getting another handgun for home defense may be a waste of your money. So, if you are just talking about home defense I wouldn't recommend a handgun when you can have more firepower.

Think about a 20 gauge pump or semi-auto shotgun. A 12 gauge kicks too much but my wife can handle the 20 gauge. I own an H&R Pardner pump just for home defense. I bought it many years ago for around $165. Since I do not hunt with it and it will never leave my house I took out the limit plug so that I can put 6 rounds in the tube. I have an elastic band round the butt which holds 5 additional round.

I have it loaded with two kinds of rounds, alternating, with a #3 buck (20 .25 pellets) leading the way, followed by a 3/4 ounce sabot slug. If the first one doesn't stop them the second will. A 328 grain lead slug moving at over 1,000 ft/s will bring down almost any animal on the North American continent. Especially animals hiding behind walls, house and car doors, that a .22LR or a .38 wouldn't penetrate. In SHTF scenarios the slugs are reasonably accurate at 100 yards and can easily drop a deer, boar or other meat animal more easily than a .22LR.
Shotgun shells are not as touchy to reload, either.
Mossberg makes the creme de la crem of 20 gauge defense shotguns.

                          Greygeek and Qqmike,

DuckDuckGo is also an excellent, anonymous search tool.

Ixquick and Startpage are the same company.

Ixquick was their first iteration and Startpage is the current version. Either one works.
