More proof MicroSoft is evil. Be careful if you're looking to buy a new laptop.

The FossBoss link on the above page is currently unavailable - could be server overload or M$ hacking it...

Hopefully, someone will start tracking which manufacturers are playing along with this garbage tactic or they'll get sued for Unfair Trade Practices. The "Signature" should have to say "WARNING: This PC will only run Windows 10."

Of course, there's always the hope the method they've selected to lock out Linux will fail miserably (like so-called "secure-boot") and 1000's of customers will find themselves with useless $1500 laptops and no recourse. A class-action lawsuit would be fun to watch also.

Here's a short list of PC makers to avoid: Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, Samsung, Razer, and Toshiba.

Interesting. Lenovo admits some of they devices are locked, and nothing changes the fact that there is a new proprietary RAID format and no linux drivers are forthcoming. Apparently, it's up to linux developers to figure it out?

Unsupported models will rely on Linux operating system vendors releasing new kernel and drivers to support features such as RAID on SSD.”

Here is some good commentary: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/44694.html

Why would Lenovo do this? I don't know for sure, but it's potentially related to something I've written about before - recent Intel hardware needs special setup for good power management. The storage driver that Microsoft ship doesn't do that setup. The Intel-provided driver does.
You say that if your guess is right, it's a cheap hack to work around crappy power management in Windows. Do we know Linux has crappy power management like Windows does?
It's a hack to work around the fact that Intel won't tell anyone else how to make power management work properly on Intel platforms, including Microsoft. Linux certainly does the wrong thing here.
To make sense of his last quote:
The change only prevents Linux being installed because Linux doesn't support modern hardware. It's easier to fix that than it is to get a vendor to push a firmware update.

To make sense of his last quote:
That is MG's blog page but his grammar is atrocious! My first thought was that the page was placed by a hacker who can't write English as a first language, or even a second one. Verb tense mismatch is a common mistake made by people using translators.

However, his msg is clear, even with the poor grammar:
The real problem here is that Intel do[es] very little to ensure that free operating systems work well on their consumer hardware - we still have no information from Intel on how to configure systems to ensure good power management, we have no support for storage devices in "RAID" mode and we have no indication that this is going to get better in future. If Intel had provided that support, this issue would never have occurred. Rather than be angry at Lenovo, let's put pressure on Intel to provide support for their hardware.

The English frequently pair collective nouns with plural verbs. So Americans say, "New York is likely not make the playoffs; the Yankees have many injuries.", while the English may note that in both cases we are talking about a team. Similarly with corporations, the crew of a ship, etc.

This is just disgusting, buy from vendors like system76 or zareason

I'm sure a driver will eventually be reverse engineered, but who's to say there won't be a new spec once it is

My next one, when this one dies, will be from System76.
