    [KDE] SparkyLinux

    Hi
I'm typing this on the latest i586 live dvd of Sparkylinux.

It is pretty much "latest and greatest".

The site says that it is based on Debian Testing. I chose the KDE home version.

It loads the live DVD quickly. bluetooth and wireless are found quickly.

It sports the Breeze interface, I tried to change it to Oxygen but it didn't seem to take, but that is probably because it is a live DVD.

It loads with the KDE logo, but with the exception of some things in the menu like "system upgrade" it seems "like" Kubuntu not "KDEbian".

It did have a rather ....different thing in "Office Suite Installer" which will, supposedly, load LibreOffice, Open Office, Abiword, Calligra MSoffice Online apps and Kingsoft (WPS) Office........okaaaayyyy.....

Yeah I had WPS but only because I installed it BEFORE I realized that it was a Chineese version of Microsith, and later removed it after I verified that the WPS files from my Android will work with LibreOffice.

It has a button for "installing multimedia codecs". and an "AMZ dowloader".

Formula Editor for LibreOffice 5 is preloaded.

So....there ya go for folks who would like to try it out.

Even though the distro runs fine as a live DVD, when I decided to install it, i586, I found that there are two installers: Sparkylinux installer and "Old Sparkylinux installer".

The first one at least "looked" new, the second looked rather Win98ish.

    Neither would boot.

I tried "advanced" and the results looked like Edward Sissorhands had had his way with the 250 GB Hitachi Deskstar,

It chopped the thing into a 210 gb swap, literally 1 gig for the distro and...... I don't really know what... lol.......but it WAS ext4!

And this hard drive has a long and venerable history of having just about any and every distro installed on it, the last being Netrunner.

It does dump you to Gparted if you want for "advanced" but it then asked for.......... installation on "/", and the dreaded dragon of the Debian installer struck. When trying to format/reformat etc. the drive Gparted it would sometimes format and then not but then it apparently didn't "take" or something...

I tried just formatting the whole HD to ext4 which is what I usually do with an iffy distro.. using Kubuntu and then another install attempt but.......again no joy.

And, today I reinstalled NetRunner on it, the hd is ok.

So...... if not for the dreaded dragon of the debian installer....... lol

Yeah, I've run across "new" distros that had problems with the installer, and I've run into "micro" distros that the installer didn't work, but after a while they got their skirts together and the distros would install.

But, I've never rally had good luck with getting "Debian" to even get through an installer a lot of times...

And yes, I HaVE installed "pure" Debian and installed KDE atop it just to prove the point, but...well...

if there was not a "concern" about installation, why did the devs provide the "old" installer? Just sayin'

Too bad, as a live DVD it ran smoothly and looked pretty good, given Breezy stuff! lol

I'm sure that others will have GREAT success, and if so please post!

How do you like NetRunner? What version? I've been testing it on the system seen in sig below.

        Try Netrunner rolling

@woodsmoke You can't use the debian installer? Here's me thinking you were intelligent.

          LOL

There are many versions of "the Debian Installer"

          https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstall

not THIS installer, lol, it wants one to install to "/", with 30 mb but there is no option in either installer to so do. lol, and You know me, all you CLI guys are the SMART ones, I'm just an old hardware guy!

I mean I ran Debian Sid in the form of AptoSid for several years so there are Debian installers and there are installers..lol

As to Net Runner, I have the LTS. works great

I even got Knoppix and formatted the drive to "/" and nada...so don't know... if Knoppix can't do what's needed this poor person certainly can't lol.
