    TransPacific Partnership and public domain

I post this merely for informational purposes and will not comment except to mention that....yet again...

something affecting EVERYBODY.......... cooked up in secret.

The TPP is a direct threat to the public interest and the commons.
It downplays the importance of the public domain and exceptions and limitations, increases the term of copyright protection, and demands harsh infringement penalties.

What Is the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP)?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation[46] has been highly critical of the leaked draft chapter on intellectual property covering copyright, trademarks, and patents. In the US, this is likely to further entrench controversial aspects of US copyright law (such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and restrict the ability of Congress to engage in domestic law reform to meet the evolving IP needs of American citizens and the innovative technology sector. Standardization of copyright provisions by other signatories would also require significant changes to other countries’ copyright laws. These, according to EFF, include obligations for countries to expand copyright terms, restrict fair use, adopt criminal sanctions for copyright infringement that is done without a commercial motivation (ex. file sharing of copyrighted digital media), place greater liability on internet intermediaries, escalate protections for digital locks and create new threats for journalists and whistleblowers (because of vague text on the misuse of trade secrets).[46]

Both the copyright term expansion and the non-complaint provision (i.e. competent authorities may initiate legal action without the need for a formal complaint) previously failed to pass in Japan because they were so controversial.[99] A group of artists, archivists, academics, and activists, have joined forces in Japan to call on their negotiators to oppose requirements in the TPP that would require their country to expand their copyright scope and length to match the United States' of copyright.[99] Ken Akamatsu, creator of Japanese manga series Love Hina and Mahou Sensei Negima!, expressed concern the agreement could decimate the derivative dōjinshi (self-published) works prevalent in Japan. Akamatsu argues that the TPP "would destroy derivative dōjinshi. And as a result, the power of the entire manga industry would also diminish."[100]

Indeed! Nothing like throwing out what little remains of Due Process and the 4th Amendment of the Bill of Right. And corporations wonder why the Left is so successful at vilifying them.

Obama wrote that his "mentor" was Frank Marshall, a hard core Communist who would make "Rev" Jeremiah Wright or Saul Alinksky look like RHINOs by comparison. I find it strange that with his Far Left leanings he would work so closely with corporations to create what is, by any definition of the word, a fascist state.

While I agree that it is a little weird that a democrat would make this kind of trade agreement a cornerstone of his presidency, I dont think 'fascist state' is at all correct.

I would have called it a "mixed economy", but "supporters view mixed economies as a compromise between state socialism and free-market capitalism that is superior in net effect to either of those." Except that the last two presidents have nearly destroyed the Constitution and any free market illusions remaining, and have unleashed a spy apparatus against its citizens, and have weaponized federal agencies to act as agents against political parties and movements which oppose the Democrats. They've militarized local police departments, many of which use the RICCO Act to justify stealing money from innocent citizens to subsidize their department equipment acquisitions and payroll bonuses.

Apparently. In today's political reality getting elected depends entirely on raising enough money for ads, staff, travel, etc. If you want to block your political opponents you block their supply of money. With out the tax exemption that a 501c3 or 4 gives donations are significantly reduced. When Janet Leher, IRS head and Obama appointee, deliberately held up 501c3 & 4 applications for several hundred groups that had conservative terms in their names she cut off their supply of money. As it turned out half a dozen Left wing organizations, also with conservative terms in their names, had their applications held up as well. The Left leaped at that small number to claim they were being harassed but in fact the majority of Left wing groups were given approval within 90 days and many had their applications expanded to include exemptions they didn't apply for. After the uproar that occured when Leher's actions were made public Leher resigned and went into hiding. Meanwhile, the IRS has continued the practice that Leher started. THAT is how the IRS was weaponized against groups that are not aligned with the Democrats.

I was not planning to reply but here is a redacted article from our "local newspaper" "in the middle of the United States"

DATELINE...newspaper from a little town of about 2,000 persons in the middle of the United States. -

Interim XXXXX County sheriff XXXXX XXXX wants to give a bullet-proof, mine resistant military vehicle back to the defense department.

The armored personnel carrier was purchased for $500

Woodsmoke comment: FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS USD

by former sheriff XXX XXX , who resigned in May after pleading guilty to embezzlement and aiding in a fraud scheme.

In a letter to Senators XXX XXX and XXX XXX , and Congressman XXX XXX , YYYYY said

"I've lived here for more than half a century and at no time do I know of any incident which has given or would give rise to the justification of the use of this type of vehicle.

The cost to store, maintain and insure the MRAP is a burden to the taxpayers of XXXX County

and, frankly, it projects the presence of a militarized law enforcement agency which I find unacceptable."

He asked the congressional delegation to "make contact and facilitate through the Department of Defense the return and recovery of this vehicle from XXXXX County."

It USED TO BE............that "the military" would "sell trucks" or "bulldozers" or "highway graders" or such to "local entities" so that the local entity could save a lot of money.....

Under Obama..........the LOCAL POLICE are........being "weaponized"...........

Is this "justified" in the Democratic Stronghold of Chicago and the "liberal stronghold" of Los Angeles? ummm it appears so.....but not in the midwest....

              or so it seems

PLEASE NOTE: I have sent the Gray Wise one the linky to this article so that he can verify it.

Yes, its all Obamas fault that a bill passed in 1997 allows local police forces to obtain military grade equipment. You radical conservative types need to screw you heads on a little tighter and stop blaming Obama for everything under the sun.

Driving home after stopping at the bank this morning. Had some driver on my a$#, in a 30 mph zone, right on me, a nice Toyota Corolla, I signaled to make a left turn, the driver still on me, as I turned and looked back, the driver was a nice, regular looking gal. Now WHY did she tailgate like that? There may not be a rational reason; there may not be any reason; her decision may have been random; or inattention; or distraction; or imagining herself as a race car driver; or she's angry at someone; or anything at all.

So the question becomes, HOW do people make their decisions?

What should scare the hE1l out of everyone in America right now is HOW people make the decision to vote GOP.

The most commonly obtained item from the 1033 program is ammunition. Some of the other most commonly requested items include cold weather clothing, sand bags, medical supplies, sleeping bags, flashlights and electrical wiring. Grenade launchers and vehicles such as aircraft, watercraft and armored vehicles have also been obtained.

The program has been criticized over the years by local media,

by the Office of the Inspector General,

U.S. Department of Defense in 2003

and the GAO which found waste, abuse and fraud.

It was not until media coverage of militarized police during August 2014 Ferguson unrest that the program drew nationwide public attention.

President Obama ordered a multi-agency review and ultimately decided to keep the program.

The ACLU has raised concerns about the militarization of police forces in the US.

                    dot, dot, dot, dot..

An inflection point occurred in the fall 2014 after several events brought increasing public scrutiny, and the eventual release of Federal records on the movement of military goods to civilian police forces was made public in December 2014
                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1033_program

Going through the links of the actual data at the bottom of the article we find that the big buildup of "vehicles" including MRAPS started in 2011.

                    http://www.npr.org/2014/09/02/342494...s-1033-program

MRAPs. Designed to withstand bullets, grenades and roadside bombs on the front lines of war, more than 600 of them have been sent to local law enforcement agencies in almost every state in the U.S.,

                    mostly within the past year.

Los Angeles County, for example, has nine of these vehicles, six of which were obtained just this past March.
The officials(Pentagon) faced a unanimously skeptical group of senators (Headed by Sen. Claire McCaskill - DEMOCRAT - Missouri)

......................at a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee called to consider militarized policing after the well-armed response to protests and looting in Ferguson, Missouri, last month.
                    http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/...-official-says

Back when I worked for "the road crew" in college we used NOTHING but "donated" military trucks, dump trucks, "oil( asphalt laying and spraying ) trucks" .....and graders, and bulldozers, and jeeps......

um.........no Sherman tanks and no MRAPS.

And you see no connection between America's withdraw from Iraq in 2011 and the sudden increase in military surplus in 2011?
