Windows 10 Auto Installed!??

    Windows 10 Auto Installed!??

    I know this isn't a Windows forum. I'm just curious if anyone with Windows 7 or Windows 8 has experienced this.

    We have a Windows 7 PC that my wife and daughter use. They have standard accounts. I have an administrator account that I install software and take updates from. I'm the only one that logs into the administrator and takes the updates. For everyday computer use I share the standard account with my wife.

    Today I logged in to our Windows 7 PC and found the update shield on the power button.


    So I launch Windows Update to see what is being updated and find this.

    I view the update history and I see this.


    I never clicked the upgrade to Windows 10 button in the system tray or attempted to upgrade to Windows 10.
    Has anyone else had this happen?

    I am unable to check the Windows 8.1 machine at the moment. But notice that the Windows 10 updates failed -- they probably failed because you haven't yet clicked on the Windows 10 upgrade button yet.

      It just seems strange that Windows 10 updates are in the queue when I haven't started the process.

        OK, I checked the ASUS laptop w/Windows 8.1 Updates History: I see the same thing you see regarding Windows 10:

        Update to Windows 10 Home Failed Important

        So NBD, it must just be the way MS is doing its update accounting.

          That's OK. You are in the "Social" forum, anyway. I think we can post Windows 10 questions, issues, and experience this way. There are two other threads started on Windows 10, also. Believe me, I'm not a Windows 10 fan or MS fan. But the spousal unit has the laptop w/8.1 that I'm in charge of maintaining and upgrading to 10. I will install through the free upgrade using the "Custom" mode so I can turn off almost all those privacy settings. Then check this to make sure I got everything I wanted (i.e., unchecked everything I didn't want):

            It would nice to turn that feature off if that is possible. I'm tired of seeing the upgrade to Windows 10 icon in my system tray.

              Yes, but here's another view on it: It's nice the way they are doing it so we see it! so it is visible and out in the open! ;-) Control.

              I haven't look into how to fiddle with it; also, I'm not a Windows expert any more (I left that distinction when I left XP).

                Right. It is visible in the system tray and not hidden. It probably isn't worth fiddling with. I have better things to do with my time than play with Windows.

                Thank for checking. The only other Windows 7 install I have is a 32 bit VirtualBox guest, and it is not eligible for an upgrade to Windows 10.

                  It doesn't seem strange to me at all. When I had the displeasure of administering some windows boxes at work, I was continually shocked/amazed at things they did on their own. As a *nix ONLY user for ~30 years, that concept is absolutely foreign to me! I expect total control of my systems at all times.

                    Doesn't sound strange to me either. My mothers laptop came with Windows 8 and with all the hype and concerns about Windows 8.1 I didn't bother upgrading it. However, Windows had other ideas and was actually downloading the files in the background, failing to install and then re-downloading, over and over. At that time she was on a mobile broadband contract and when the bill came in she had gone over the quota several times and had a massive bill!!

                    I too cant not stand this attitude. The update cycle is a absolute joke. It made me laugh today after all the hype of Windows 10 and the brand new Edge browser there are critical updates for it, so much for the safest and more secure browser!!

                      Looking at the file sizes I dont think this is the Windows 10 update which is approx 3-4Gb apparently. Maybe it is the upgrade tool it is trying to update?

                        Yep. That's what it is.

                        I googled and found this.
                        How to stop the Windows 10 Upgrade from downloading on your system

                        This got rid of the "Get Windows 10" app button in the system tray and took care of the issue.


                        It was Microsoft update KB3035583. It is a recommended update. I like how it says "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows".


                        This is what the Microsoft site says when you look up KB3035583.
                        Update installs Get Windows 10 app in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1
