Will you install Windows 10?

I have to deal with this piece of drek (Win 10 and continuous updates) at the college. I'm still running Windblows Vista on my Sony Vaio where I have the crossword and test generator programmes ( I now run them in WINE) and never use it.

In my paranoia I took it and My Toshiba lappy with ...don't remember which Kubu on it, when I went to Austin to give presentations on my teaching methods, ( I was told that there would NOT be lappys in the presentations rooms!! :0 I mean what's up with THAT! a national organizagion thousands of attendees hundreds of presenters and ....no lappys! ) But, both the Vista and the Kubu machine interacted with the projection software fine and e-mail. Same in Key Largo, I now only take the Toshiba Lappy.

ANNNd I've posted this elsewhere, the Kubuntu machines worked with the college's software when I was teaching online for it, also for U of P when I was doing online only.

BTW, The Windows market share has been below 90% for quite awhile and dropping, Microsoft centric (and dependent) websites and pundits not withstanding. Microsoft's retail sales channel is where the count of installs comes from, and MS owns that data? Do you trust it? When they first released WinPhone after sinking Nioka, to inflate the numbers in an attempt to get out of the one digit % basement they were even counting phones still on the production line, in addition to those pilling up on the warehouse shelves unsold because no one liked them.

As far as computers with WinX on them consider that just like their phone sales MS controls the info that comes out of their retail sales channel. Do you trust them? Another thing to consider is that when someone switches to Linux they usually do that at the expense of a Windows installation. So, Windows sales count remains but the number of machines running Windows decreases while the number of Linux machines increases. So sales channels do not reflect reality, especially when MS controls the info. Also, web visitation counts are so biased, especially those websites which make money promoting Linux. Using this website I can prove that Windows share is 42% and Linux's is 47%.

Also, what really stinks is how MS is using Canonical to bail itself out of another stink bomb of an OS and, in the process, give an opportunity to blame Ubuntu for Win10's problems. Putting Ubuntu's BASH shell on Win10, in which any Linux app (CLI, GTK+, KDE4/5) can be run is an attempt to short circuit the flight of WinX users away from Windows to Linux and Mac. I suspect that it will fail because for the last 10 years Microsoft has developed a habit of turning Lemonade into Lemons.

Microsoft Admits Latest Windows 10 Cumulative Update Slows Down Computers

Microsoft has confirmed that one of the latest Windows 10 cumulative updates, KB3156421 specifically, is making some PCs really slow, and apparently this is a known issue. Something that Redmond has known for a few weeks now, and has been trying to track down and fix.

I've tried putting Windows 7 back on my laptop thinking it was as good as anything else since I do most of my work on my Desktop (which runs Kubuntu 12.04). Boy was I wrong. Windows 7 was buggy as all get out and I couldn't get hardly anything done. Not to mention it was just plain slow.

My wife has a Windows 8 computer and it's been prompting her to upgrade to 10 incessantly (harassment anyone?). I finally got the update causing it uninstalled and turned off automatic updates since it keeps getting reinstalled. No, I finally got 8 to do mostly what I wanted it to do and I'm not going to do anymore unnecessary work so no 10 if I can help it.

As part of a final push to boost the number of PCs running Windows 10 before the July 29 expiration of its free upgrade offer, Microsoft has altered the behavior of a notification dialog so that clicking the "X" in the upper-right corner authorizes the pre-scheduled upgrade.

The other day, a friend let his grandson, age 10, a smart boy, use his PC, and the g-son "accidentally" caused Windows 10 to be installed (replacing Win 7 or 8 with the upgrade). He obviously got the standard upgrade and did not control the opt-out options. Now, my friend says the PC is almost unusable with many and various ads popping up right in his face. Of course, it is possible to turn off a long list of these "privacy" settings; but I'm seeing similar uninvited advertising behavior on our Windows 8.1, and have heard it gets worse in Win X.

The G-son is not responsible for the "upgrade". As the link pointed out MS changed its own rules and specifically re-wrote the "X" button to be a second "OK" button, thus DECEIVING the consumer into upgrading to Win10 even though by clicking the "X" button the consumer was deliberately taking action which they thought would decline the update. In otherwords, Microsoft is doing what it have done so often in the past: lie, cheat and steal.

Anyway, no, a resounding no, I only use Linux, and will continue to do so.

+1! Same here...Windows-free since 2010 and Linux user since 2008! No reason to ever go back.
