Server Malware, "mumblehard" Ongoing infection

I found this report in two places, today. It seems to be an existing set of Linux/BSD malware (5 years existence).

HA, software that backdoors spammers and uses their machines to send other spam... can't say I have much sympathy for them.

Based on the discussion on ./ the other day, it seems the main infection vector was installing unauthorised copies of BulkMailer. WHY would you do that?
