    Opera beta for Linux

I have downloaded and installed Opera beta for Linux and have been using it for the past couple of weeks and I must say I do quote like it. One of the first things that I noticed was that web pages appear to render very quickly. Another thing I've noticed is the way it displays bookmarks. It doesn't bring up a list of your bookmarks but displays them as tiles in the main window. It has also been quite stable.

So far my only criticism is that there appears to be no way of changing the default search engine to use from Google, I have, however, installed the DuckDuckGo extension which allows me to use that to search with, but when using speed dial the default Google search field always displays. I haven't got Flash plugin installed for Opera beta, if I want to watch the odd youtube video I'll fire up Firefox.

I do wish though that some of the items that were in Opera version 12 and earlier were also in this beta version things such as download manager and e-mail client. Opera's e-mail client is now a standalone app but at the moment is only available for Windows and OSX.

Even though it uses the same rendering engine as Chrome and even looks very similar to Chrome I cannot compare it to Chrome because I've never used it.

Check PPA for it or download the Debian package here http://www.opera.com/computer/beta

I forgot to mention, Opera beta is only available for 64 bit architecture.

Im so happy that Opera is coming back to Linux. It was my browser of choice for many years until they stopped Linux support. Waiting for it to come out of beta though...

I've just installed Opera developer (version 27.0.1676.0)

Shhh! Don't tell Opera that I'm not a developer of their browser.

                          About youtube-dl

The youtube-dl is sometimes needed to view the youtube clips. Missing or too old youtube-dl will show as a 'Cannot open' error.

The Ubuntu repositories have the package youtube-dl: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?ke...ll&section=all

The latest version is easy to install and update from the source: http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/ -> http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html

                          :~$ sudo youtube-dl --update

Updated youtube-dl. Restart youtube-dl to use the new version.
                          :~$ youtube-dl --help
                          Usage: youtube-dl [options] url [url...]

Wow. Opera is back. I used it years ago and loved it. Tried it a year ago and was not impressed. I just downloaded the the new Opera deb file. Installed it on my Xubuntu and it works great.

                            Thanks for the tip.

edit: There is one major flaw. Google-talkplugin doesn't work. It keeps saying to install google-talk, which is already installed. I use it all the time on Firefox.
It works using Firefox, but not Opera. One wold think " NPAPI deprecation" would also apply to Firefox.
