    Windows 7 is Back, HP

Just got an email from HP with the title "Windows 7 is Back" It looks like pressure from customers drove the decision, and many are unhappy with 8/8.1. Apparently Windows 8 continues to generate unpopularity.

Here's an article from December 13th. It's a little dated.
Death of Windows 7 OEM Sales Posted in Error

Last week we reported that Microsoft quietly updated its operating system lifecycle chart with the end of sale dates for Windows 7. The company discontinued the sale of Windows 7 as a standalone retail product on October 30, 2013, followed by the end of sales for PCs with Windows preinstalled on October 30, 2014. That has now changed.

The chart now shows the end of sales for PCs with Windows preinstalled as "to be determined." A Microsoft rep told Computerworld that the company has yet to determine when Windows 7 will no longer be sold to OEMs. The date posted last week was done so in error.

    ...

As pointed out last week, Microsoft's end-of-retail-sales date is a meaningless deadline, as many online retailers will continue to sell the software long after Microsoft pulls the plug. Although Microsoft itself has pulled Windows 7 from its virtual shelves, Amazon remains stocked full of various versions of Windows 7, as does tech specialist Newegg. Even some of Newegg's partners still carry Windows Vista and Windows XP.
I admit to buying 32 bit Windows 7 to run as a virtual guest when I first heard the October 30th 2013 deadline. I still rely on Quicken and have to use Windows for that. I plan to wean myself off quicken and ultimately off Windows. We do use Windows 7 at work, so it helps to stay familiar with the interface.

I had kept Windows XP as a VM just for Quicken Windows. But I moved to KMyMoney several years back, and finally had no more need for Windows. Have you given KMyMoney a try?

Tried KMyMoney but would not do my brokerage accounts, direct download that is. So I use Win 7 in a VM.

That's my next project. I've been eying KMyMoney for some time.

I recently removed my VirtualBox after saving my WinXP.vmdk & .vbox and related files. But, I recently installed RosettaStone 1.52 using WINE and it runs great. Now, if I could just remember the first lesson block long enough to get out of it ....

Sinofsky’s Windows gambit deliberately imposed lots of short-term pain on users, as they were thrust into an unfamiliar touchscreen interface, whether they wanted one or not, or had a touchscreen or not.
Was Sinofsky a greater influence on Shuttlesworth than we realize?

For those who don't remember, the Securities and Exchange Commission accused the former star dotcom-era Merill Lyncher of providing analysis that was apparently in conflict with his private views: stocks called a “P(iece) o(f) S(hit)” in his private emails were lauded as “accumulate”-able in his research notes.Blodget never admitted guilt but did settle with the SEC, accepting a permanent ban from the securities industry and coughing up a $4m fine. He went on to run popular biz and tech website Business Insider.

WHO, in their right mind, would ever trust again the investment advice from someone who spoke with a forked tongue?

I just started a new job with a company building a data center for the Navy. An interesting thing has transpired. I'm the Unix/Linux/Vmware admin and there are a bunch of Windoze/Vmware admins. Well they thought it would be cool to use Windoze 8.1. I run a ton of Centos and RedHat so I just loaded up my Centos 6.5 KDE desktop and was ready in about 30min. This was 2 weeks ago. They are still being scanned and having to harden (stig) their boxes. I wrote a script awhile back to do everything for hardening (stiging) centos/redhat. It took a couple of minutes to run. To make a long story short, I've been working and getting things done while they have been trying to get their workstations on the network. They are talking about maybe using 7. My next thing is to get Kubuntu accepted for workstation builds then I'll be all set. Kubuntu is my first choice for any desktop. It just works.

Why is the hardening process taking so long? Do they not know what to do to make Windows stig-ready?

Well for one its government.... nothing is ever easy or fast. They were ready for scanning in about 2-3 days but it turned into a turf war with one command against a new command (The one I work for). The funny thing is we all worked for the command thats giving all the heart burn. We split off to do Data center work. Then there is hbss, mcaffe, lumensia, and whatever other crap they need loaded. Each time is a csr and it just gets ugly after a while. Meanwhile I've been cleared and ready to roll with a Linux KDE desktop and a single scan. I think its more political than anything else.

More precisely it is the military. I was the engineer on a commercial product for the Navy many years ago. It was a 16mm projector, that is how long ago it was, sold mainly to school systems. It ended up costing three times as much to the Navy and delivery was moths instead of days, because of all the documentation and testing we had to do. The funny thing is there were no design changes needed to the product.

Isn't there an old Army proverb: "There are two ways to do things. The right way and the Army way."?
