an idea from Win8 surface advert

This may take some pertinent questioning from readers but I'll take a stab at it.

There is a current advert for Win8 surface in which an African American Lady, a postal worker who drives the mail truck(to help folks who may see the advert to relate to it) which "may" have a statement that is relavent to KDE plasma tablet software rollout.

The general gist of the advert is that she says something to the effect of:

"It has a keyboard and office on it so that I can do stuff"......notice the DO word.....like if you are typing on a wordprocessor you are somehow "doing" something as opposed to fiddling on facebook, where one is, evidently in the MS centric world, ..."NOT doing something".

The next sentence is the one which really intrigues me..... because MS does not spend money without at least a LITTLE thought! lol

"And I have the tablet for me! ( stuff I want to do ) ".

now the inflections on the words are a kind of "matter of fact" inflection...........

In other words there is no emphasis on any particular word, just "matter of fact"

And then the lady turns away and gets into the mail truck.

    ***************

Soooooooooooooooooooooo in terms of "attracting MS centric people who may be considering "Linux" for the first time....

Possibly the plasma tablet software could have AS DEFAULT............ maybe TWO "cashews" that are fixed and would have to be removed by following instructions provided in an included document in a "desktop folder"......

    One would be labled:

    "work" or maybe "work/school"

    and the other:

    "Me".

And have "default" applications pop up when the cashew is tapped.

In otherwords Microsith may have done some "group study stuff" and has determined that in the MS centric world that the word "me" makes things all warm and fuzzy and people will take it as "non-threatening" and we might as well capitalize....... sic, lol, on it!

Now of course WE....in our wonderful Linuxy wisdom "everybody knows that"....but NEW people do not NECESSARILY know.... that they can access anything in the menu......

The point being to IMMEDIATELY "attract" and set at ease... people when they first see a plasma tablet.

Just a thought but.......again, even though Microsith does "fling" money at things and has a bajillion "studies" before they do anything....

They did not include that last sentence for no reason.

    COMMENTS Questions EXPECTED!!

the general idea being that is MS has spent sufficient bucks to do research and then spent more bucks to add the "for me" in the advertising, maybe there could be a "for me" cashew that would pop, not "work related stuff" like office but say ....dunno........ twitter and the like.

It is a marketing thing. Clearly once users have the device they will use "for me" apps when the want and office apps when they want. I see no advantage to having a "for me" cashew. As was pointed out activities can serve the same purpose. Stress that in marketing the Linux device.
Linux because it works. No social or political motives in my decision to use it.

There is already an activity button.... Its a widget that brings up all you activities, including any social ones you care to make.

                That is a good comment,

and yes I use them all the time. One for office stuff, one for music stuff, one for photo stuff, etc.

But the thing about you and me is that we already KNOW that..

The new user to Linux does not KNOW that, it is all new to them, all they may have heard is that it is "not windows" if even that.

But, the point of the advert was that Microsith has, apparently spent a lot of money determining that people think of a "computer" as being......."work"...the keyboad the phraseology of one of the other adverts is "real" work.

and that a "tablet" is for "play"........."me".

And they are saying that their tablet is "fun" and that the keyboard makes the tablet into "work".

Well..........if they think that there really IS a dichotomy in the mind of the purchaser....

then maybe Kubuntu Plasma might capitalize on that and emphasize that there is a "button" of some kind, the activity button or an extra cashew, or something, that says......

"me" maybe with a smileyface on it

                and

                "school/work" for that SERIOUS stuff....

so that the NEW user to Linux, straight from windblows, standing in a box store.........

Is looking at surface..........and at a KDE plasma tablet....

and the KDE tablet has a "thing" that the girl sees says........."me"............and pushes it and voila!! Twitter and YouTube, and Facebook and Amarok suddenly appear!

And if he pushes "work" or "school" magically the "me" stuff disappears and .........a wordprocess or and maybe firefox appear...

Just a thought about how to "market" KDE on a tablet in a "walk by" thing in a store to a NON Linux user.

                just a thought.

                  Line fm Kubu Review DW

This line from the latest review at DW fits nicely into what the thread is "tangentially" about...

People who are not experienced in something tend to go with what "other people" say is good.

If MS has a "me" thing then ....."other people" must have said this is good, so I'll get a "me tablet".

There are other nice features too.

For example, the (Discover) package manager lists popular software items so we can get an idea of what was useful for other people.
Now, we, as experienced people, we think of that as meaning...."oh there is something new!".

But people who are NEW to Linux probably think of it as: "well if other people think it is a good office application" then Linux might be ok.

                  And I also noticed this:

I (Reviewer) also noticed a social media account manager in the panel which allows us to keep in touch with contacts in a way which integrates nicely into the desktop. I haven't used this feature enough to decide whether I like it or not, but I think the idea of having a multi-protocol chat & notification client built into the desktop has the potential to be useful.
there are also a couple of niggles but the the reviewer liked the release.
